ACC Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Youssef Ramadan Fires 44.15 100 Fly

Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan delivered the standout swim of the second morning session of the 2023 ACC Championships, setting a Greensboro Aquatic Center record in the 100 fly.

Ramadan was the top seed with a time of 44.15 seconds. That downs a pool record set by Ryan Hoffer in 2021 (44.24). It also improves the NCAA A cut he held. It’s an event he’s won each of the last two years.

Women’s 400 individual medley

Ella Nelson is in position to help Virginia solidify its grasp of the team competition. She set the top time in the morning in the 400 IM at 4:07.03, just .31 ahead of Louisville’s Abby Hay. UVA has three in the top six. Duke’s Sally Foley is the third seed.

After finishing fifth in the 500 free, Jack Hoagland is in better position in the IM. He went 3:42.50 to take the top seed in prelims, the Notre Dame senior a second clear of the field. Keith Myburgh of Virginia Teach was second in 3:43.61, with NC State’s Owen Lloyd third.

Women’s 100 butterfly

Gabi Albiero set a season-best time and nabbed an A cut in the event at 50.72. It meant a rarity of rarities – Kate Douglass being behind another human being in a swimming pool. The UVA star is the second seed in finals after a 50.96 in the morning. Teammate Gretchen Walsh tied for third with Louisville’s Christiana Regenauer. Walsh and Douglass are the only two swimmers with sub-50 swims this year in the field.

Virginia and Louisville, the two main team title contenders, have three A finalists each.

Men’s 200 freestyle

Michael Eastman gave Louisville a top seed with his time of 1:33.45, but the final heat is immensely jumbled, the top eight finishers clustered withing .54 seconds. The final could be a clash of styles: Notre Dame sprinter Chris Guiliano is lurking in sixth, while Georgia Tech distance star Batur Unlu is third. The fastest seed entering the day, Luke Miller of NC State, is in the thick of it in fifth.
