ACC Championships Day 2: Kate Douglass Goes 1:50.70 for 200 IM Record

Kate Douglass wasted no time at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Wednesday morning.

The UVA star senior blasted a 1:50.70 in the prelims of the women’s 200 individual medley. That’s the top seed by more than four seconds, and it sets a meet and pool record. In her sights at night is the conference/NCAA/American record of her teammate Alex Walsh at 1:50.08.

It was the latest installment of UVA domination on the second day of five at the ACC Championships.

Women’s 500 freestyle

Virginia will pick up plenty of points with three A finalists, but Georgia Tech’s Deniz Ertan leads the way in prelims. Her time of 4:40.03 was clear of the field by a half second. Cavaliers are on her tail, with Ella Nelson second and Maddie Donohoe third.

Men’s 500 freestyle

James Plage is a big of a surprise as the top seed in finals, but the NC State junior earned it with a 4:14.45 in prelims. That was marginally quicker than Notre Dame’s Jack Hoagland, comfortably in second. Batur Unlu, the top seed entering the meet, is fourth in the final after going 4:15.97.

Women’s 200 individual medley

Kate Douglass dominated as is required by now. Her splits:

  • 23.95 – 27.86 – 32.17 – 26.72 – 1:50.70.

Those are the four fastest legs in the event. (She also brought it home slightly slower than the 26.69 used by Giovanni Izzo, the third seed in the men’s race.)

Abby Hay of Louisville is second in a distant 1:55.07. NC State has three A finalists, led by Kennedy Noble in third.

Carles Coll Marti set up an intra-Virginia squabble in the final. The Va Tech junior set the pace in 1:42.51, just .13 up on Virginia’s Tim Connery. NC State pushed a quartet into the A final, Izzo third and Arsenio Bustos fourth.

Women’s 50 freestyle

Kate Douglass takes a Walsh record, so it’s only right that a Walsh take a Kate Douglass record.

Gretchen Walsh did that in the 50, going 21.01 to ern the top seed by .58 seconds. It down’s the pool mark set in 2021 by Douglass (21.09). In Walsh’s sights are the ACC/American/U.S. Open/NCAA record of 20.84 belonging to Douglass, though Douglass may have a say in the 200 free relay.

Second is Gabi Albiero in 21.59, an A cut for the Louisville junior. Katharine Berkoff was third in 21.68 with UNC’s Grace Countie fourth.

Youssef Ramadan set the pace with a time of 18.86 seconds, a NCAA A cut for the Virginia Tech junior. Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano was second in 19.07, but there will be contenders elsewhere in the final. Matt Brownstead is the three seed in 19.14, followed by the NC State duo of David Curtiss and Nyls Korstanje.
