Missouri Earns First 2020 Verbal from Sprinter Sierra Smith
NEW COMMIT: The University of Missouri has earned their first verbal commitment for the class of 2024 from Plymouth, Minn. native Sierra Smith.
Primarily a sprint freestyler, Smith does her club swimming with Life Time Swim Team and owns the U.S. Open cut in the 50 free with a Winter Juniors standard in the 100 free. She most recently competed at NCSAs where she finished 15th in the 100 free with four new personal best times. Smith capped off her successful long course season by placing second in the 50m free and fourth in the 100m free at Rochester Futures this past summer.
Also competing for Armstrong High School, Smith is a five-time Minnesota 2A State Championship finalist. She was the runner-up in both the 100 free and 200 free as a junior after placing ninth and third, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.
She told Swimming World:
“I’m beyond excited to join such an incredible family. A huge thanks to my parents, coaches, and friends that have helped me along the way! Go MIZZOU!”
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 23.25
- 100 free – 50.22
- 200 free – 1:50.58
- 50m free – 26.39
- 100m free – 58.06
When she arrives on campus for the 2020-21 season, Smith will add valuable depth to Missouri’s sprint group that’ll include Sarah Thompson, Megan Keil and SJ Porter. Although she’s not in scoring range just yet at the SEC Championships, she has continuously made improvements each season with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Tigers.
