2023 NCAA Men’s Championships: Leon Marchand Chases 200 IM History (Heat Sheets)

Leon Marchand will be hunting a repeat in the 200 individual medley Thursday at the first prelims session of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Swimming Championships at the University of Minnesota’s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Marchand is the top seed by a wide margin in the shorter IM, which he won last year. He set an NCAA record there, then lowered in in-season this year to 1:37.81. He’s the top seed by nine tenths over reigning 400 IM champ Hugo Gonzalez of the University of California.

Also in the morning is the 500 free, in which Gabriel Jett of Cal is the top seed, with he, Georgia’s Jake Magahey and Jake Mitchell of Florida all under 4:10. How Cal, Florida and Texas stack up in the 500 could go a long way toward deciding the title race.

The 50 free wraps up the morning session, where it’ll take 18-low to make the A final and might take 18 to make it back. Jordan Crooks of Tennessee is the pace-setter in 17.93, but Josh Liendo of Florida (18.35) and Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger (18.87) will be among those who have something to say about it.

Prelims begin at 11 a.m. ET with six heats of the 500 free, followed by eight heats of the 200 IM and seven of the 50 free.

Men’s 1-meter diving prelims will fill the midday, with the finals at night along with the 200 free relay final.
