2022 SEC Championships, Day 5: Trey Freeman Delivers Epic Mile Win

There will be no shortage of signature moments in Florida’s 10th consecutive SEC title. But Trey Freeman’s entry on the final day of the 2022 SEC Championships might take the cake.

Freeman hit the wall at 1,500 yards more than three seconds behind teammate Tyler Watson and the pre-race favorite, Jake Magahey from Georgia. But in a nod to his famous teammate who isn’t present this weekend, Freeman just destroyed the final 150 yards to get the win.

In a finish that could only be described as Finke-ian, Freeman got his hand to the wall first in 14:39.74 to win the mile, Florida taking two podium spots and four of the top six to consolidate its hegemony over the SEC field. Coupled with a clean sweep of the five relays, the Gators scored 1,414 points to dominate the field by more than 400 points. That was ahead of a tie – yes, a tie – between Alabama and Tennessee for second.

Luca Urlando of Georgia took home the SEC Commissioner’s Trophy and the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet honor. LSU’s Juan Celaya Hernandez is the Diver of the Meet.

The event-by-event recap of the final night of the 2022 SEC Championships.

Men’s 1,650 freestyle

Spare a though for Tyler Watson. For 1,200 yards, the Florida junior was in total control of the race. For 1,400 yards, he looked like a winner. But he ended up third, the early rabbit overhauled by the chasers. As consolation prizes go, a first ever sub-15-minute time in 14:40.45 isn’t too bad.

The race was all about Trey Freeman. Even without Bobby Finke, the reigning national champion and NCAA record holder in the event, missing the meet due to health and safety protocols, the Gators distance group didn’t miss a beat. These splits from the final five 50s:

  • Trey Freeman – 26.10 26.06 25.68 25.03 23.92
  • Jake Magahey – 26.65 26.64 26.60 26.31 25.22
  • Tyler Watson – 27.17 27.07 26.82 26.75 24.94

That’s how you claw back a four-second deficit in a hurry. Freeman’s winning time is a high B cut, with Jake Magahey second in 14:40.20. Auburn’s Michael Bonson was in the conversation until the end in fourth, while Oskar Lindholm and Alfonso Mestre added huge points for the Gators.

Men’s 200 backstroke

The phrase “off event” is always relative when it comes to Kieran Smith. One man’s off event is another’s top-end speed.

Smith and his Florida coaches will face decisions across the board at NCAAs, the latest rendered by Smith clocking in at 1:39.51 to win the 200 back. Smith was pushed by Ethan Gogulski, who got picked up the lead at 150 yards with a 25.19 third 50. But Smith came home in 25.43, working his last wall and using all 6-foot-5 of his frame to get the better of Gogulski by .07 seconds. Both are B cuts, with Gogulski in 1:39.58. Anze Erzen, his teammate and the top seed from prelims, was third in 1:40.31.

Men’s 100 freestyle

The battle of Brooks v. Crooks delivered, as did the former over the final 25 yards.

Brooks Curry covered the final 25 yards in 10.80 seconds, clawing back six tenths on Jordan Crooks to win the 100 free in 40.99. It’s an SEC Championships record, downing the time Caeleb Dressel set in 2016 (41.07). He also takes Dressel’s pool record and is the eighth-fastest in NCAA history.

Crooks was with Curry all the way, the Tennessee freshman going 41.64 to grab silver to augment his gold in the 50 free. Adam Chaney of Florida was third in 41.83. Curry and Crooks both have A cuts.

Men’s 200 breaststroke

Derek Maas and Reid Mikuta went back and forth in the 200 breast, but it was the 100 breast champ who got a second gold medal. The Alabama junior got to the wall first in 1:51.56, an SEC meet record that trims .02 off Nic Fink’s seven-year-old mark. It also downs Anton McKee’s pool record from 2017.

Mikuta was second in 1:52.09, also under the pool record and like Maas an NCAA A cut. Andres Bustamante Puente was third in 1:52.77 for Texas A&M.

Maas’s win helps Alabama scoot two points in front of Tennessee in the race for second. The Crimson Tide are just 17 points clear of fourth-place Georgia entering the final relay.

Men’s 400 freestyle relay

It’s five-for-five in relays, 10-for-10 in league titles for Florida.

Macguire McDuff, Adam Chaney, Eric Friese and Kieran Smith coasted home with a time of 2:46.91, a pool record to win the crown by a second and a half. Smith brought it home in 41.31, just .01 slower than Chaney’s leg.

Tennessee finished second to hold off the push by Alabama in the team standings. Both hit A cuts – UT in 2:48.46, Bama in 2:49.11 – to finish tied for second. Jordan Crooks led the Vols out in 41.44, just .02 slower than the leadoff leg by Brooks Curry in a lead-off leg 100 free rematch in the B final. Matt Menke brought Bama home in an impressive 41.88.
