2022 SEC Championships, Day 4 Prelims: Luca Urlando Blasts Meet Record in 200 Fly

Luca Urlando got Day 4 of the 2022 SEC Championships off to a fast start, setting a meet and pool record in the 200 butterfly to get Georgia going. The time of 1:40.14 was nearly a second clear of the field.

Urlando’s swim is part of Georgia’s effort to mount a charge in the team standings. It may be too little, too late to catch Florida, but four teams are clustered within 40 points entering the day in the race for second.

The full prelims recap is below. Friday’s finals session will also include men’s platform diving and the 400 medley relays.

Men’s 200 butterfly

Luca Urlando led three Georgia Bulldogs in the A final of the 200 fly. His time took down the pool record (set in 2017 by Georgia’s Pace Clark) and the SEC meet record (Auburn’s Hugo Morris from 2016). Matt Sates is third in 1:41.91, and Andrew Abruzzo grabbed the sixth seed in 1:42.97. With only one Florida swimmer (Jace Crawford in fifth) in the A final, it’s a chance to make up some ground.

Women’s 100 backstroke

We’ve yet to see what the backstroke and breaststroke can do outside of the relays, and the opening salvo from Rhyan White hinted that they can do quite a bit. White, who was second in the 100 fly, led the way at 51.08. She owns has been 50.15 this season and owns the conference, meet and pool records.

Missouri and Kentucky each have two A finalists. Sarah Thompson was second for the Tigers in 51.65. Caitlin Brooks of the Wildcats is third.

Men’s 100 backstroke

The stroke slate of Day 4 isn’t Florida’s strength, per se, which magnifies Adam Chaney being the top seed in the 100 back. He set an NCAA A cut of 44.91, his best time this season by .99 seconds. He’s more than three-quarters of a second ahead of the second seed, Auburn’s Nathan Stoffle. Chaney is Florida’s only scorer in the event, though there’s no pressure behind them, with Georgia missing the A final.

What’s better than one Irish Olympian for Tennessee? Two Irish Olympians.

Mona McSharry set the pace in the 100 breast in 57.79, an NCAA A cut and more than a second clear of second-place Zoie Hartman of Georgia. McSharry entered with a 57.46 to her name this season’ the only other sub-58 swimmer was Alabama freshman Avery Wiseman. Wiseman finished a surprising seventh in prelims, at just 59.65. Wiseman and Diana Petkova (third in 59.13) give the Crimson Tide two A finalists.
