The 2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships continued with the first prelims session on Thursday.
Cal is the defending champion and got off to a strong start with an win in the 800 free relay, but disqualified the 400 medley relay, as did Arizona State. With diving having happened last week, that leaves USC in first place ahead of Stanford and Cal is stunningly in sixth heading into Day 2.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 500 Free
Stanford senior Grant Shoults put together a nice and easy 500 free to take the top seed. His time of 4:15.32 was three seconds slower than his seed time, but enough to take the top seed and likely have some more left in the tank for finals.
On the other hand, Arizona State freshman Julian Hill dropped eight seconds from his seed time to take the second seed in prelims in 4:15.62.
Arizona’s Brooks Fail took the third seed in 4:15.80, while Cal’s Trenton Julian was fourth in 4:16.44.
Arizona State’s Benjamin Olszewski took the fifth seed (4:17.30), followed by Cal’s Calvin David (4:17.98), Sean Grieshop (4:17.99) and Arizona State’s Liam Bresette (4:18.04).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 IM
Cal took four of the top six seeds in the 200 IM, including the top two.
Daniel Carr took the top spot in 1:42.15, ahead of teammate Zheng Quah (1:43.78).
Stanford’s Brennan Pastorek was third in 1:44.41, ahead of Cal’s Bryce Mefford (1:44.7). Stanford’s Alex Liang took the fifth seed in 1:44.49, followed by Cal’s Reece Whitley (1:44.53).
Arizona’s Etay Gurevich (1:44.57) and Sam Iida (1:44.68) rounded out the top eight.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 50 Free
Cal made it two events in a row getting the top two seeds. As expected Ryan Hoffer and Pawel Sendyk took the top two spots.
Hoffer, the defending NCAA champion, took the top seed in 19.10, while reigning All-American Sendyk took the second spot in 19.15.
Arizona State freshman Jack Dolan took the third seed (19.40) just head of Cal’s Michael Jensen (19.41).
Arizona State’s Evan Carlson took the fifth seed in 19.48, followed by USC’s Nikola Miljenic (19.53), Arizona’s Marin Ercegovic (19.56) and Arizona State’s Cody Bybee (19.64).
