Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships

Bloomington, Indiana

The 2020 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Saturday morning from the campus of Indiana University with the heats of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 200 fly.

Ohio State had the best morning with nine total swimmers advancing to the A-Finals as Indiana had eight and Michigan had six. The Wolverines are expected to score a lot of points in the 1650 so they should not be worried about their lead dwindling tonight.

The full ups, mids, downs report is below. The teams are in order of the scores after last night.

200 Back

Wisconsin senior Cameron Tysoe is the top seed in the 200 back heats with a 1:40.62 as he is looking to be the first Wisconsin Big Ten champ since 2015 when Matthew Hutchins and pool record holder Andrew TeDuits won individual titles. Tysoe is seeded ahead of Penn State’s Michael Daly (1:41.42) and Northwestern’s Martos Bacarizo (1:41.56), who will also look to make history for their schools.

The Nittany Lions’ last Big Ten champ came in 2017 when Shane Ryan won the 100 back and Northwestern last had a champion in 2015 when Jordan Wilimovsky won the 1650.

Ohio State freshman Thomas Watkins (1:41.83) is the fourth seed ahead of junior teammate Colin McDermott (1:41.85).

Indiana’s Gabriel Fantoni (1:41.95), Michigan’s Robert Zofchak (1:41.98) and Ohio State’s Jonah Cooper (1:42.05) also qualified for the A-Final.

100 Free

Indiana has been on fire in the sprint relays, winning three of them so far, and they scored three up in the 100 free on Saturday morning in their home pool at the Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. 50 free winner Bruno Blaskovic posted a pool record time of 41.49 to just miss Blake Pieroni’s meet record of 41.43. He will be joined in the final by teammates Mohamed Samy (42.71) and Jack Franzman (42.72) who were third and fourth.

Two-time champ this weekend Andrew Loy is seeded second at 42.30 but he may not have enough to get by Blaskovic in the final.

Iowa’s Aleksey Tarasenko (42.90), Michigan’s Gus Borges (42.93), Ohio State’s Matthew Abeysinghe (42.96) and Ohio State’s Semuede Andreis (43.08) also qualified for the championship final.

200 Breast

Ohio State’s Paul DeLakis, who has finished twice this weekend in the 200 IM and 200 free, is the top seed in the 200 breast with a 1:52.39 morning swim. He is seeded ahead of 100 champ Max McHugh of Minnesota (1:52.44). Both guys made the A-Final at last year’s NCAA with McHugh getting second and DeLakis getting sixth.

Michigan’s Tommy Cope (1:52.55) should also factor into the medals tonight as he is the third seed for the Wolverines. Michigan was able to advance seniors Charlie Swanson (1:52.88) and Jeremy Babinet (1:54.11) to the final as well.

Ohio State’s Jason Mathews (1:52.76), Iowa’s Daniel Swanepoel (1:54.54) and Wisconsin’s Jian Mao (1:54.78) also advanced to the championship final.

200 Fly

We highlighted the 200 butterfly as one of the races to watch coming into the meet and it should definitely live up to the hype as four guys have a chance to take home the title. Northwestern freshman Federico Burdisso, who was fourth at the World Championships while representing Italy, is the top seed at 1:42.45, but he will be surrounded by Indiana freshman Brendan Burns (1:42.47) and Michigan senior Miles Smachlo (1:42.55), who were not far behind him.

Burns was second in the 100 back and third in the 100 fly while Smachlo won last night’s 100 fly final. Ohio State senior Noah Lense (1:43.18), who was last year’s NCAA B-Final champ in this event, could also pull off the win tonight.

Indiana’s Van Mathias (1:43.56), Iowa’s Michael Tenney (1:44.18), Wisconsin’s Joseph Milinovich (1:44.44) and Indiana’s Chris Bathurst (1:44.45) also advanced to the championship final.
