2020 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Day 2 Prelims: Korstanje Goes 19.07
A tight-to-the-vest morning session on Day 2 of the ACC Men’s Championships sets up an intriguing evening session. The top swimmers in both the 50 free and the 500 survived prelims in high places, and the balance in the 200 IM indicates an open race for finals.

The event-by-event recaps:
500 freestyle
Notre Dame’s Zach Yeadon kept it long and strong, defending his top seed with a 4:14.03. The junior has company, with Ross Dant of NC State and Notre Dame’s Jack Hoagland within six-tenths. There’s a gap of more than a second and a half after fourth seed Eric Knowles of NC State (4:15.26). But Yeadon may have more in reserve in the evening session. The ACC record set by Matt McLean at 4:10.00 in 2009 is a nice even milestone to chase.
On the team front, Notre Dame put three swimmers in the A final, a huge haul given that 10 of the 12 teams have an A finalist on Night 2. (And of the two that don’t, Miami is diving only.) Louisville missed the A final but has two B and two C finalists.

200 individual medley
This one is wide open. Louisville’s Evgenii Somov, who was 18th in last year’s ACC Men’s Championships, set a fast time in prelims at 1:43.68. Not far behind is Ted Schubert of Virginia, sixth last year, who was second in 1:43.68, with Daniel Sos (the fourth-place finisher in 2019) in third. All three were in the 1:43s. That leaves defending champ Caio Pumputis fourth at 1:44.67. He went 1:41.28 last year, the pool record.

50 freestyle
Nyls Korstanje isn’t a surprising top seed, going from a seed of 19.11 to 19.07. Top seed Blaise Vera isn’t far back at 19.32, tied for third, with Mihalis Deliyiannis in second.
But ties abound at the ACC Men’s Championships – Vera and Virginia Tech’s Thomas Hallock for third, plus ties for sixth, ninth and 17th. It took a 20.00 from Charles Gingrich of Duke to get the 24th and final seed in the evening.
Team-wise, Florida State filled finals with seven swimmers. But only Peter Varjasi (tied for sixth in 19.52) made the A final. NC State has three B finalists while Louisville, led by Deliyannis, snuck three into the A final.
