NC State and Louisville struck first in the relays contested on Day 1 of the four-day ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday night. But the Cardinals, which entered as the top seed in the 200 medley relay, were dealt a blow to their team score with a disqualification.

A look at the events of Night 1.

200 medley relay

It was going to be a close race, with the top three squads clustered within .09 seconds in their seed times. NC State took control of the final, winning in an NCAA A cut of 1:24.13. The margin over second-place Florida State (1:24.51) was made mostly on the anchor leg by Nyls Korstanje, who fired off an 18.62 leg, the fastest relay time in the nation. Coleman Stewart’s 20.83 leadoff leg in back was the second-fastest in the nation this year. It’s the sixth time in seven years the Wolfpack have won the event.

Georgia Tech snuck into third with Virginia fourth, both breaking 1:25. But the surprise was Louisville’s DQ for a jump on the freestyle leg. They’d been out front by more than a second when Nicolas Albiero handed off to Mihalis Deliyiannis.

Louisville exacted a little revenge in the second relay, leading six A cuts into the wall with a winning time of 6:12.02. Albiero put the Cardinals in clean water with a 1:32.45 and they never looked back, the winning team of Colton Paulson, Andrej Barna and Samuel Steel.

NC State took second in 6:14.98, a relay that Stewart (1:33.06) was the fastest split on. Florida State was third (in a school record 6:15.94 for its first podium finish at the ACC Men’s Championships in the event since 2010), followed by Virginia Tech, Virginia and Notre Dame (a school-record 6:16.86) in sixth.
