2019 TYR Pro Swim Series Des Moines: Michael Andrew Closes With Two More Wins [RACE VIDEOS]
Michael Andrew closed the final night of the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines with two more event wins in the 100 back and 50 free, taking down two Olympians in the process. Also impressive on the final night of finals was Kathleen Baker, who vaulted to #1 in the world in the 100 back, and Kelsi Dahlia, who tied her own top ranked time for 2019 in the 100 fly.
Check out recaps of the night’s swims and full results below:
Women’s 800 Free
Leah Smith held off a charging Hali Flickinger to take the opening win in the 800 free, 8:29.12 to 8:29.96. Those two battled it out throughout the race, remaining relatively even through the 400 before Smith managed to separate herself a bit in the second half. That gives Smith the fastest time in the world for 2019.
Flinkinger did have a strong push over the last 100 to bring the race within a second, but it wasn’t enough to get to Smith. The two were well ahead of the rest of the field, finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of third place Kaersten Meitz (8:38.98).

Women’s 100 Back
Kathleen Baker was out quick and held on, touching the wall in 59.17 to drop more than a second from her seed from this morning and move past Regan Smith to take the #1 time in the world. That also gives her a sweep of the backstroke events at the TYR Pro Swim Series Des Moines.
In second was Olivia Smoliga (59.35), who had the fastest closing split of the field and also moved past Smith’s former #1 time to sit second in the world in the event. These two were well ahead of the rest of the field, with Ali DeLoof finishing third in 1:00.10.

Men’s 100 Back
Michael Andrew grabbed the first of two potential wins tonight in the 100 back, just holding off Japan’s Ryosuke Irie 53.98 to 54.03. Andrew was out fast as the only swimmer in the field under 26 seconds (25.96), and was able to hold off a charging Irie at the touch. This is Andrew’s fourth event win in Des Moines after winning the 100 breast, 50 back, and 50 fly.
That moves Andrew up to #3 in the world for 2019 and the second-fastest American behind Ryan Murphy, who is currently ranked #1. Irie’s time moves him up to #3 in the world. In third was Grigory Tarasev (54.17), who dropped about 6-tenths off his prelims swim to grab third ahead of Team Elite’s Jacob Pebley (54.39).

Mission Viejo’s Annie Lazor added to her win in the 100 breast with a sterling swim in the 200 breast. Lazor and Kierra Smith were virtually tied at the 100 before Lazor turned it on to distance herself on the third 50.
Lazor held on down the stretch to hit the wall first in 2:22.99, to beat her lifetime best from the first stop of the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series that had also stood as the #1 time in the world for 2019.
Smith held on for second in 2:24.41, just ahead of American Bethany Galat (2:25.66).

Men’s 100 Fly
Caeleb Dressel won his first event in Des Moines tonight, getting to the wall just ahead of Marius Kusch. Dressel’s time of 51.51 was just a touch behind Kusch’s prelims time of 51.35, which currently stands as the #1 time in the world.
Notably, it was Dressel’s second half that was the real difference-maker in this race, as he was only third at the 50 and nearly seven-tenths behind Kusch at the 50. Kusch was out fast in 23.53, about two-tenths faster than he was this morning, but ultimately couldn’t hold on and finished second in 51.58, just behind Dressel.
Those two were the only two under 52 seconds in the field, with bronze going to Luis Martinez (52.17).

Women’s 200 IM
Melanie Margalis swam a well paced 200 IM in Des Moines to come charging home with the win over the second half. Margalis was out third at the 100 (1:03.18), but used her strong back half to best the field by more than two seconds with a final time of 2:10.88.
That time is just off of Margalis’ season best from the Knoxville stop of the TYR Pro Series, where she was 2:10.43, which currently has her fourth in the world rankings. In second was teenager Kayla Sanchez from Canada (2:12.93), while Kathleen Baker made her second podium appearance of the night after winning the 100 back by finishing third here (2:13.27).
Baker was out very quick at the 100 in 1:01.70, but couldn’t match the speed of Margalis in the second half.
