2019 Speedo Sectionals Minneapolis Day 4: Stege Sweeps Distance Events

The fourth and final day of the 2019 Speedo Sectionals in Minneapolis experienced the extremes and everything in between. This evening we saw the distance swimmers conquer the 1500, then the sprint swimmers power through the 50. The 200 Individual Medley put the all-around swimmers to the test, and the 400 Medley Relay tested the team’s all around ability.

Rachel Stege was reigned the distance queen, while Tevyn Waddell was named a force to be reckoned with in any of the strokes. Caleb Aman remained undefeated in an I.M. event at this meet, and Cameron Kelley showed his dominance in freestyle. The events covered today were the 200 Individual Medley, 50 Freestyle, 1500 Freestyle and the 400 Medley Relay.

Women’s 200 Individual Medley

University of Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell kept up her winning streak to win her third event of the weekend, the 200 I.M. Waddell clocked in at a winning time of 2:19.12, slightly ahead of the second place finisher, Callahan Dunn at a 2:20.23.

Kaylynn Schoof from the Elmbrook Swim Club finished with a 2:20.53 to take third. Wisconsin Aquatics Jenna Silvestri slammed the wall at 2:21.45, with Megan Hutchins only 5 hundredths behind her at a 2:21.50. Emma Lasecki (2:22.05) finished sixth, followed by Mallory Jump (2:22.42), and Brecken Merkel (2:23.03).

Men’s 200 Individual Medley Relay

Wisconsin Aquatic’s Caleb Aman takes his second win of the weekend and touched the wall first with a 2:03.79. Nicholas Saulnier of University of Minnesota slammed the wall next with a 2:07.36.

Aquajet’s Dolan Craine (2:08.17) completed the top three and out touched St. Charles’s Kyle Lewarchick (2:08.48). Wyoming teammates Seth Borgert (2:09.83) and James Bouda (2:09.93) took fifth of sixth respectively. Benjamin Attenberger (2:10.21) came out ahead out Mitchell Hovis (2:10.66) to place seventh and eighth.

Women’s 50 Freestyle

16 year-old Grace Cooper of Delta Aquatics took the 50 freestyle win by over seven tenths, which is arguably a large margin for the 50 freestyle. Grace Cooper touched the wall at a 25.16, followed by Mantas Swim Club’s Danielle Nack (25.82) and Fox Valley’s Mckenna Stone (25.87). Cooper, Nack, and Stone all qualified for the Olympic Trials with their respective times.

Hannah Burvill (26.00) clocked in at fourth, followed by Pyper Doo (26.32),and Kristen Anderson (26.48). Grace Hanson (26.57), and Sarah Schemmel (26.76) rounded out the A final.

Men’s 50 Freestyle

The top three of the Men’s 50 freestyle qualify for the Olympic Trials as well. Hawkeye’s Joseph Myhre was the first to the wall with a winning time of 22.91. A teammate of Myhre, Stjepan Fiolic, was second to the wall at 22.98. 16 Year-Old Connor Boyle from Fox Valley Swim Club hit the Olympic Trials on the dot with a 23.19 to take third.

Grant Sloan (23.36) clocked in next, followed by Lucas Farrar (23.52) and Kevin Braun (23.59). Matthew Thomas (23.66) and Emilio Perez (23.72) conclude the Men’s top 8.

Women’s 1500 Freestyle

Call her the Distance Freestyle queen of the 2019 Speedo Sectionals in Minneapolis, Rachel Stege wins the 1500 after winning the 400 and 800 freestyle earlier this week. Fox Valley Swim Team’s Rachel Stege had the winning time of a 17:02.58.

Less than a second behind Stege touched University of Minnesota’s Abbey Erwin at 17:03.16. Barrington Swim Club’s Magdalena Emary finished third at a time of 17:07.41. In fourth place was Claudia Chang (17:18.04), followed by Lilian Reader (17:21.92), and Katherine Randall (17:22.46). Emily Bucaro also from Barrington, finished seventh with a 17:25.34 and Keely Tierney finished eighth at a 17:38.05.

Men’s 1500 Freestyle

Cameron Kelley dropped seventeen seconds to win the gold in the Men’s 1500 freestyle at a time of 16:03.08. Wisconsin Aquatic’s Graham Miotke (16:10.15), and Robert Niemann (16:11.60) take second and third in the event.

Griffin O’Leary (16:18.49) claimed fourth followed by Timothy Rizzo (16:19.05), Joseph Bozzi (16:27.01), and Robert Mitchell (16:29.06). Ean Vandergraaf (16:31.62) from New Trier aquatics clutched eighth to complete the top eight.

Women’s 400m Medley Relay

Elmbrook Swim Club decided to spice up the evening and pulled an “upset” win to take the gold. Elmbrook Swim Club’s winning time of 4:13.34, put them just slightly ahead of Wisconsin Aquatics at 4:15.58. St. Charles Swim Team takes third, and out touched Elmbrooks B Relay at 4:23.00. The women of Fox Valley take fifth with a 4:23.77. Riptide (4:24.55) finished sixth, followed by Maverick Swim Club (4:25.64) and Edina Swim Club (4:25.64).

Men’s 400m Medley Relay

The Men of the Fox Valley Swim Team dominated each leg of the relay to take gold in the event. The anchor of Fox Valley slammed the wall at a 3:47.67, about two seconds ahead of the closest team. Wisconsin Aquatics (3:49.33) and Wyoming Aquatics (3:49.46) put up a tough battle, but in the end Wisconsin took third while Wyoming took fourth. St Charles Swim Team (3:54.41) out touched Elmbrook Swim Club (3:54.45) by only four hundredths of a second. In sixth and seventh were Illinois club’s West Swim Club (3:55.14) and West Chicago Sharks (3:55.64). To conclude the top eight of the men, Aquajets Swim Team kept it below 4:00 with a final time of 3:59.93.
