The second day of nationals continued with more teen star power, but it wasn’t Regan Smith this time, though she did swim the event.
Fifteen-year-old Claire Tuggle took the top seed in the event with a 1:58.21. It is the fourth-fastest 15-16 age group time in U.S. history.
Tuggle’s time for her age only trails Missy Franklin (1:55.06), Katie Ledecky (1:56.32) and Dagny Knutson (1:57.73).
Tuggle, of Clovis, used a 27.81 first 50 to build a lead, then closed with a 30.26 to earn the top seed.
Paige Madden took the second seed in 1:58.69.
There was a tie for the third seed with American record-holder Allison Schmitt and Brooke Forde each finishing in 1:58.75.
Sun Devil Aquatics’ Cierra Runge took the fifth seed (1:59.36), followed by Club Wolverine’s Gabby DeLoof (1:59.46), Alto’s Katie Drabot (1:59.51) and Sun Devils Aquatics’ Erica Lanning (1:59.97).
With Schmitt, Runge and Lanning, three from Sun Devil Aquatics will be in the final.
