2019 Canadian Swimming Trials Day Two Finals: Kierra Smith Gets Redemption With #1 Ranked 100 Breast
The 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials will continued in Toronto tonight with finals of the para 100 free, 100 free, 100 breast, 400 IM, 50 back, and para 50 back. This is the qualifying meet for all upcoming major international meets for the Canadian team, including the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
In order to qualify for Worlds, swimmers must finish in the top 2 of their event and achieve a FINA ‘A’ qualifying standard.
Tonight we’ll see Penny Oleksiak battle for a spot in the 100 free along with Taylor Ruck, who has already made the team in the 100 back. Kierra Smith will also be looking for redemption in the 100 breast, after she was dq’ed after posting the fastest time in finals yesterday.

Women’s 100 Free
Taylor Ruck grabbed her first National Title of the weekend, out-touching Olympic gold medalist Penny Oleksiak 53.26 to 53.60. Ruck took it out fast as the only woman to flip under 26 seconds at the 50. That gives the Stanford freshman the second-fastest time in the world for 2019, just behind Cate Campbell (53.21) and ahead of Sarah Sjostrom (53.29). Oleksiak’s time moves her up to sixth in the world rankings.
In third was Kayla Sanchez (54.22), who was neck and neck with Oleksiak at the 50 but couldn’t hold on in the second half. Rounding out the top four was Maggie MacNeal (54.51), who was the champion in the 50 fly last night. That finish should put MacNeil on the Canadian roster as part of the 400 freestyle relay, which will be her first major international meet after declining her Pan Pacs invite last summer to go compete at Junior Pan Pacs.

Men’s 100 Free
Mark Thormeyer had a huge swim in the 100 free to come in just under the FINA A standard of 48.80. His winning time of 48.76 dropped more than half a second from his prelims swim and gives him a second swim at Worlds after he broke the Canadian record in the 100 back last night.
Just behind him was the top seed from this morning, Yuri Kisil. Kisil was the only swimmer to break 49 this morning, but couldn’t quite match that tonight and finished just off his prelims time in 49.11. In third was William Pasani (49.43), who won the 50 fly last night, followed by Carson Olafson (49.53).

Women’s 100 Breast
Kierra Smith found redemption tonight after her disqualification in last night’s 200 breast, handily winning this event by exactly one second. Smith got her hands to the wall first in 1:06.54. Smith was actually second at the 50, but had by far the fastest back-half to distance herself from the rest of the field and punch her ticket to Worlds. That gives Smith the #1 time in the world for this year, un-seating American Annie Lazor.
In second was Kelsey Wog in 1:07.54. Wog finished in the runner-up position last night in the 200 breast as well, but was just short of hitting the FINA A standard tonight. In third was Rachel Nicol (1:07.94), while Faith Knelson was fourth in 1:08.00. Knelson was the leader in this race at the 50 (31.14), but couldn’t hold on in the second half of the race.

Men’s 100 Breast
Richard Funk won a close race in the men’s 100 breast, just touching out second place Gabe Mastromatteo 1:01.18 to 1:01.24. Funk was out ahead with a comfortable lead at the 50, but Mastromatteo came back on him in the second 50 to just miss out on the win. While Funk missed the FINA A standard of 59.95, he will likely be added to the Worlds roster as a part of the 400 medley relay.
These two were well ahead of the field, as Eli Wall rounded out the podium in a 1:02.04.

Women’s 400 IM
Sydney Pickrem earned her second event win at this meet in the 400 IM, touching first over Emily Overholt 4:35.15 to 4:37.88. Overholt, who is the national record holder in the event, was the top qualifier from this morning and led through the fly leg before Pickrem took control of the race. The two were both well under the FINA A standard, which gives Overholt a spot on the Worlds roster and Pickrem a second event in Korea. That also moves Pickrem up to #2 in the world rankings behind Katinka Hosszu, while Overholt moves up to #6.
Tess Cieplucha got within a second of Overholt on the freestyle leg, but ultimately didn’t have enough to catch her. She rounded out the podium in 4:38.96.

Tristan Cote won the men’s 400 IM in a time that just sneaked under the FINA A standard, adding one more to Canada’s World Championship roster. Cote touched the wall in 4:17.85, just .05 under the standard needed to qualify for Worlds in South Korea.
The field was pretty close through the fly leg, but Cote became the clear leader heading into the breaststroke. He was the only swimmer to go under 4:20 in tonight’s final. In second was Montana Champagne (4:21.40), who held off Collyn Gagne (4:21.49) and Josh Zakala (4:21.74) in what was a tight race behind Cote.
