The first night of the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships featured the 200 medley and 800 free relays on Wednesday night at the University of Iowa. Michigan started the night with a win in the 200 medley relay and Indiana won the 800 free as the two teams are tied at the top of the team standings after two events.

Michigan broke the meet record in the 200 medley relay that they set all the way back in 2013 when they won the national title that year. The Hoosiers missed the meet record but did get under the pool record in the 800 free relay.

800 Free Relay

Indiana fired back in the 800 free relay as the Hoosiers set the pool record in the event with a 6:11.02. The team of Mohamed Samy (1:33.36), Vini Lanza (1:32.45), Zach Apple (1:31.76) and Ian Finnerty (1:33.45) broke the pool record that USC set at the 2015 NCAAs of 6:11.64.

Indiana was in a tight race with Ohio State and Michigan before Apple unleashed a 1:31 on the third leg. The Hoosiers are now second in Division I right now behind Florida’s time from SECs last week.

Indiana has won three straight Big Ten titles in the 800 free relay.

Michigan finished in second at 6:13.16 as they out-touched Ohio State (6:13.44) at the finish.

Wisconsin (6:22.86), Minnesota (6:22.87), Iowa (6:23.07), Penn State (6:24.31) and Northwestern (6:25.61) also placed in the top eight.
