2019 Australian Open Water Championships: Cotter, Lee Win on Final Day

It was a fast-paced final day of action at Brighton Beach in Adelaide, with the Men’s and Women’s Open 5km Time Trial marking the first races of the day at the 2019 Australian Open Water Championships.

National champion in the Boy’s 18-year-old 10km race on day one, Lawnton’s Hayden Cotter (54:43:60), continued his red-hot summer form taking out the men’s race ahead of Canada’s Jon McKay (54:50.90). Noosa’s Nick Sloman (55:00:11), winner of the Men’s Open 10km race on Saturday, was the second Australian home and claimed the silver medal and Kawana Water’s swimmer Bailey Armstrong (55:29.20) took the bronze as the third fastest Australian.

In the women’s race, Noosa’s Kareena Lee (58:37.79) added another gold medal to her collection following her win in the Women’s Open 10km on day one. She was closely followed by fellow Australian Dolphin from the TSS Aquatic club, Kiah Melverton (1:00:11.83), who received the silver medal, with Yeronga Park’s Ebony Blackstone (1:00:44.99) claiming the bronze.

The last races of the day were the hotly contested club relays. Miami (1:04:06:89) took out the Mixed 14-15 year-old 4 x 1.25km race, with Hunter (1:04:41.77) taking the silver and Revesby Workers (1:04:58.14) the bronze.

In the Mixed Open 4 x 1.25km relay race, TSS Aquatic (57:49.97) came out on top, with Perth City (57:57.28) claiming the silver and Kawana Waters (58:18.14) finishing with the bronze medal.

Perth City received the coveted spoils of “Club of the Championship” following some strong performances over the weekend from the likes of Reilly Kennedy, Chloe Green and Kelsey Eastwood.
