Andrew Wilson Posts 59.19 100 Breast During Day 3 Prelims at Atlanta PSS

During the Saturday morning prelims session at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Atlanta, Texas-trained Andrew Wilson threw down a 59.19 in the men’s 100 breast to finish well ahead of a powerful field heading into the final. The 100 breast was one of 10 events in the session.

Women’s 200 Fly

Athens Bulldog’s Hali Flickinger moved ahead of Cardinal’s Kelsi Dahlia on the third 50 in the final heat of the 200 fly, and Flickinger pulled away from there. She touched in 2:09.47 to qualify first for the final by three seconds.

Dahlia took second in 2:12.47, followed by Arilson Silva’s Liliana Szilagy (2:12.95) and Trojan Swim Club’s Haley Anderson (2:13.77). Other finalists included Enfinity’s Olivia Carter (2:14.14), Magnolia’s Lillie Nordmann (2:14.32), Makos’ Alena Kraus (2:14.52) and Team Elite’s Sarah Gibson (2:15.01).

Men’s 200 Fly

Nation’s Capital’s Jack Conger has already posted wins in the 100 fly and 200 free in Atlanta, and he posted by far the best prelims time in the 200 fly at 1:57.60. He finished almost 2.5 seconds ahead of Athens Bulldog teammates Chase Kalisz (2:00.09) and Pace Clark (2:00.90).

HPC-Victoria’s Mack Darragh took fourth in 2:00.96, and others qualifying for the A-final included Scarlet’s Dare Rose (2:01.21), Longhorn’s Tripp Cooper (2:02.54), Cal’s Tom Shields (2:03.24) and Antonio Nunez (2:03.38).

Women’s 100 Breast

Tennessee Aquatics’ Molly Hannis blasted a 1:06.43 for the top seed in the 100 breast prelims, finishing more than a second ahead of Olympic silver medalist Yulia Efimova. The Russian qualified second in 1:07.46, and third went to China’s Yu Jingyao at 1:08.43.

Just behind her were New York Athletic Club’s Breeja Larson (1:08.45) and China’s Shi Jinglin, followed by a tie between Chattahoochee Gold’s Micah Sumreall ad South Florida’s Alia Atkinson at 1:08.70. Eighth went to HPC-Victoria’s Faith Knelson in 1:08.72.

Men’s 100 Breast

Longhorn’s Andrew Wilson threw down a time of 59.19 to lead the 100 breast prelims, beating his own personal best of 59.51. But while Wilson is clearly hitting his stride this weekend, the field for the final should be one of the meet’s most competitive.

Cal’s Josh Prenot qualified second in 1:00.59, and Sandpipers of Nevada’s Cody Miller was third in 1:01.00. Race Pace Club’s Michael Andrew, the 50 free winner Friday night took fourth in 1:01.11, just ahead of Tiger Elite Racing’s Kevin Cordes (1:01.27).

Longhorn’s Will Licon (1:01.45), Tiger Elite’s Felipe Lima (1:01.46) and Athens Bulldog’s Nic Fink (1:01.55) also got into the top eight.

Women’s 100 Back

Athens Bulldog’s Olivia Smoliga posted a quick time of 1:00.26 for the top seed in the women’s 100 back prelims, but she will be challenged in the final by Canadian teenager Taylor Ruck. Ruck, representing HPC-Ontario has already posted stellar swims in the 100 free, 200 back and 200 free in Atlanta (all wins), and she qualified second in this race in 1:00.36.

Italy’s Federica Pellegrini (1:00.61) and Wolfpack Elite’s Alexia Zevnik (1:00.98) also broke 1:01, and they were followed by Canadians Kayla Sanchez (1:01.02) and Jade Hannah (1:01.04). Michigan’s Ali DeLoof (1:01.31) and Italy’s Carlotta Zofkova (1:01.37) claimed the outside lanes for the final.

Ryosuke Irie of Team Elite and Japan qualified first in 54.33, well ahead of UBC Thunderbirds’ Markus Thormeyer (55.17). U.S. Olympians Jacob Pebley (55.21) and Ryan Murphy (55.60) cruised into the final in third and fourth, respectively.

Tiger Elite’s Shane Ryan (56.01) and Missouri State’s Paul Le (56.02) were next, and the Italian duo of Luca Spinazzola (56.26) and Simone Sabbioni (56.67) rounded out the top eight.

Following the 100 back, HPC-Ontario’s Taylor Ruck qualified first in another event, posting a 2:04.14 in the 200 IM. Her teammate Kayla Sanchez took second in 2:14.53, and Longhorn’s Madisyn Cox took third in 2:15.35.

UBC Thunderbirds’ Erika Seltenreich took fourth in 2:15.54, and a fourth Canadian, Rebecca Smith, took fifth in 2:16.77. Also making the final were Argentina’s Virginia Bardach (2:18.76), Enfinity’s Olivia Carter (2:19.06) and UBC Thunderbirds’ Hillary Metcalfe (2:19.48).

Men’s 200 IM

Athens Bulldog’s Chase Kalisz out-dueled Race Pace Club’s Michael Andrew in the final heat of 200 IM to qualify first for the final. Kalisz, after dominating the 400 IM Friday night in 4:08.92, touched in 2:02.38, ahead of Andrew’s 2:02.83.

The final will be Kalisz’s second of the day, as he also qualified second for the 200 fly final. Andrew, along with third qualifier Josh Prenot (2:03.34) and fifth qualifier Will Licon (2:03.88), will swim in both the 100 breast and 200 IM finals.

HPC-Victoria’s Mack Darragh took fourth in 2:03.41, with Missouri State’s Uvis Kalnins (2:03.92), Simklubben’s Simon Sjodin (2:03.93) and Dynamo’s Raunak Khosla (2:04.78) also making the final.

China’s Wang Jianjiahe will look to add a 400 free win to her earlier triumph in the 800 free. She qualified first in prelims at 4:10.50, about one second ahead of TAC Titans’ Ashley Twichell (4:11.46).

Athens Bulldog’s Hali Flickinger took fourth in 4:13.73, with Sandpipers’ Erica Sullivan (4:14.51) and Chile’s Kristel Kobrich (4:14.63) coming in behind her. Also making the final were Trojan’s Haley Anderson (4:14.71), Magnolia’s Kaitlynn Sims (4:15.06) and Sandpipers’ Chloe Freeman (4:17.07).

Men’s 400 Free

Marwan Elkamash touched out Mission Viejo’s Zane Grothe in the first heat of the 400 free, 3:56.00 to 3:56.02, and those times held up to secure the duo lanes four and five, respectively, for the evening final. HPC-Victoria’s Jeremy Bagshaw qualified third in 3:56.15.

North Carolina’s Dimitrios Dimitriou took fourth in 3:57.13, and Baylor’s Trey Freeman was fifth (3:57.21). Also getting in were SwimAtlanta’s Jake Magahey (3:57.61), Scarlet’s Dare Rose (3:58.46) and Nick Carlson (4:00.36).
