Gianluca Urlando Sets Pair of NAG Records on Night Three of 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals West
Gianluca Urlando stole the show on the third night of the 2018 Junior National Championships West in Austin, Texas. The sixteen-year-old set a pair of boys’ 15-16 National Age Group records in the 100 fly and 100 back.
Regan Smith also set her second Junior National meet record of the weekend in the 200 free while Katharine Berkoff did the same in the 100 back. Zoie Hartman lowered the Juniors West meet mark in the 100 breast as well.
The fourth and final day of the meet will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. CST (10:00 a.m. EST) and will see action in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free and 4×100 free relay.

Women’s 400 IM
Crow Canyon’s Zoie Hartman successfully completed the IM sweep this weekend after adding the women’s 400 IM title to her 200 IM meet record from last night. Hartman led the race from start to finish, dropping nearly five seconds from her morning swim to post a final time of 4:10.44.
Magnolia Aquatic Club’s Kaitlynn Sims finished second in 4:11.13 while Metroplex Aquatics’ Lindsey Looney was close behind in 4:11.27 for third. Both swimmers posted significant time drops from their previous best times.
Springfield YMCA’s Megan Van Berkom (4:12.81), Bellevue’s Sarah Dimeco (4:15.33), Central Iowa Aquatics’ Gillian Davey (4:15.47), Texas Ford Aquatics’ Ashlyn Fiorilli (4:15.63) and Boise YMCA’s Charity Pittard (4:16.98) rounded out the top eight.
Mission Viejo’s Katie Crom dropped well over three seconds from her morning swim to win the B-final in 4:15.34.

Men’s 400 IM
In what was a tight race at the 250 mark, La Mirada Armada’s Kevin Vargas started to pull away and took off on freestyle to claim the men’s 400 IM title. Vargas, who will become a Gator next fall, posted a final time of 3:47.52.
Charger Aquatics’ Jack Hoagland had the fastest freestyle split in the field to race to second place in 3:49.30, a new best time by almost five seconds. Phoenix Swim Club’s Zachary Tan wound up third in 3:49.62.
Also competing in the top heat were DU Hilltoppers’ Will Goodwin (3:49.74), Scottsdale Aquatics’ Jordan Tiffany (3:50.62), Mission Viejo’s Jason Schreiber (3:51.97), Tigard Tualatin’s Ben Miller (3:53.22) and Metroplex Aquatics’ Jed Michael Jones (3:54.20).
Katy Aquatics’ Tyler Kopp used a strong backstroke leg to pull away from the field to claim the B-final in 3:52.87, knocking off nearly nine seconds from his previous lifetime best.
Winning the C-final of this event was 14-year-old Tona Linn of SoCal Aquatic, who posted a lifetime best of 3:52.52. That time moves him up to fourth all-time in 13-14 age group history behind Tyler Lu (3:51.54), Michael Andrew (3:52.08) and Carson Foster (3:52.25).

Men’s 100 Fly
For the second time today, DART Swimming’s Gianluca Urlando set a new boys’ 15-16 National Age Group record in the 100 fly. After posting a time of 45.97 during prelims he erased Michael Andrew’s previous record of 46.23 set back in 2015. He became the youngest swimmer to ever crack the 46-second barrier.
He then lowered his own mark during finals, getting his hands to the wall in 45.62. Only a high school junior, that time currently ranks fifth in the NCAA so far this season. He also owns the boys’ 15-16 National Age Group record in the 100m fly.
He currently sits on top of an impressive 15-16 all-time list and owns three of the top-6 times:

Men’s 200 Free
Swimming in his home pool, Longhorn Aquatics’ Coby Carroza won the men’s 200 free gold. After winning the 500 free last night, he added his second individual title tonight after stopping the clock in 1:34.67.
Kamehameha’s Michael Petrides grabbed the silver in 1:35.21 and Edina Swim Club’s Peter Larson took the bronze in 1:35.36.
Also racing in the A-final were Sierra Marlins’ Colby Mefford (1:36.06), Santa Clara Swim Club’s Max Saunders (1:36.44), Hillsboro Swim Team’s Luke Thornbrue (1:37.36), Rockwood Swim Club’s Jack Dolan (1:37.54) and Beach Cities Swimming’s Christian Bathurst (1:37.64).

Women’s 100 Breast
Not too long after winning the 400 IM, Hartman found herself on top of the podium for the third time this weekend. The Georgia commit got her hands to the wall in 58.94, a new personal best time and Juniors West meet record. The old record was held by Zoe Bartel in 58.98 set last year.

Missoula Aquatics’ Katharine Berkoff lowered the Junior National meet record for the second time today during finals. The NC State commit controlled the race from start to finish to win in 50.72. She eclipsed her own record of 50.83 done during prelims.
Berkoff’s time now ranks her third in history for the girls’ 17-18 age group rankings:

Aquajets’ Isabelle Stadden was the only other swimmer in the field under 52 seconds, sneaking below the barrier in 51.96 for second. Pikes Peak’s Meredith Rees cruised to third in 52.94.
Buenaventura’s Tea Laughlin (53.41), Crow Canyon’s Sophia Kosturos (53.71), Sticklen (53.75), Beach Cities Swimming’s Alexandra Crisera (53.80) and DART Swimming’s Zoe Cosgrove (54.60) completed the fastest eight.
Spitz blasted a best time of 53.37 for a win in the B-final.

Urlandoset a new National Age Group record for the second time of the meet, this time in the 100 back. Shortly after lowering his own boys’ 15-16 NAG record in the 100 fly for the second time of the day, Urlando was back in the water to break yet another national age group mark. After coming within six-hundredths of the record during prelims, his finals’ time of 45.66 erased the previous mark of 45.83 set by Destin Lasco earlier this year.
Urlando now owns three of the top 10 fastest times in boys’ 15-16 age group history for the event:

Bellevue’s Dang (23.17), Christina Bradley (22.71), Jazlynn Pak (22.96) and Gracie Felner (22.32) combined to win the women’s 4×50 free relay in 1:31.16, two-tenths ahead of the runners-up.
Crow Canyon’s Sophia Kosturos, Hartman, Alexis Depaco and Shelby Suppiger took second in 1:31.36 and third place went to Aquajets’ Abby Kapeller, Taylor Williams, Peyton D’Emanuele and Stadden in 1:31.65.

Irvine Novaquatics’ Slusiewicz (20.31), Brian Lou (20.47), Christopher Mykkanen (20.73) and Hunter Ingram (20.63) came out on top of a tight men’s 4×50 free relay to conclude the night. They combined for a winning time of 1:22.14.
Rose Bowl’s Dalmacio, Will Blake, Mark McCrary and Danny Syrkin finished second in 1:22.27 while Sierra Marlins’ Ben Dillard, Colby Mefford, Sean Swift and Finn O’Haimhirgin took third in 1:22.34.
Alamo Area Aquatic Association (1:22.45), Chicago Wolfpack Aquatic Club (1:22.72), Scottsdale Aquatic Club (1:22.87), Nitro Swimming (1:22.98) and Premier Aquatics Club of Klein (1:23.28) completed the top eight.
