Men’s ACC Championships Day 3 Finals: Ryan Held, NC State Extend Lead
The NC State Wolfpack have a massive lead at the men’s ACC championships, pushing towards a fourth-straight team title. Ryan Held and Anton Ipsen each won their second individual events of the meet during Friday night’s finals session as NC State grabbed victories in five of the six events on the day.
The Wolfpack have a total of 1020 points, well ahead of Louisville with 802.5. It should be a battle for the rest of the spots in the top five on the final day of the meet, with Notre Dame (624), Virginia (598.5) and Florida State (583.5) all in the mix.
100 Fly
NC State’s Ryan Held won his second individual event of the meet, topping the sprint fly in 44.96. He fell just a bit short of his ACC record of 44.79 set last year but moved up to second in the country behind Joseph Schooling (44.78).
The Wolfpack finished 1-2 as Coleman Stewart came in second behind Held at 45.11. The race was Stewart’s first of two on the evening, before he swims as the top seed in the 100 back. Two other Wolfpack swimmers swam in the final, with James Bretscher taking seventh (46.15) and Giovanni Izzo finishing eight (46.48).
Louisville’s Nicolas Albiero picked up third-place honors with his time of 45.60, just ahead of the Virginia duo of Bryce Keblish (45.76) and Zach Fong (45.95). Louisville’s Zach Harting took sixth in 46.03.

400 IM
Virginia’s Brendan Casey held the top seed for the 400 IM final, and he turned at the halfway point almost even with Louisville’s Etay Gurevich. Gurevich then took off on the breaststroke leg, putting in jeopardy NC State’s undefeated streak in individual events at the meet. But NC State’s Anton Ipsen would not give in.
Ipsen stormed home with a monster freestyle split, erasing Gurevich’s bodylength lead over the first 75 yards of free, turning dead even with 25 yards to go and then pulling ahead. Ipsen touched in 3:40.48, good for his second win of the meet after winning the 500 free Thursday. He finished ahead of Gurevich, who touched in 3:41.30, and Casey came in third at 3:41.94.
Louisville’s Daniel Sos took fourth in 3:42.68, two seconds ahead of NC State’s Eric Knowles (3:44.68). Other finalists included Virginia’s Robby Giller (3:44.72), UNC’s Henry Campbell (3:44.84) and Louisville’s Jarrett Jones (3:48.10).

Louisville freshman Evgenii Somov was tied with senior teammate Carlos Claverie at the 50-yard mark, but he accelerated on the second half and pulled away to win in 52.18. Claverie took second in 52.69 to make it a 1-2 for the Cardinals, one hundredth ahead of UNC’s Michael McBryan (52.70).

NC State’s Coleman Stewart broke the ACC record in the 100 back for the second time today, blasting a time of 44.54. That not only improves upon his No. 1 national ranking, but he also became the fifth-fastest swimmer of all-time in the event. Only Ryan Murphy, Nick Thoman, John Shebat and Matt Grevers have ever been quicker.
Louisville’s Nicolas Albiero, who like Stewart was swimming in his second A-final of the night after the 100 fly, took second in 45.44. Virginia’s Joe Clark, in contention for the first 75 yards, faded the last 25 and ended up third in 45.54.
The rest of the final included NC State’s Noah Hensley (46.14), UNC’s Alvin Jiang (46.49), NC State’s Hennessy Stuart (46.80), Notre Dame’s Rob Whitacre (46.99) and NC State’s James Bretscher (48.12).
