The 2018 men’s and women’s Big 12 Conference Championships wrapped up this weekend with the University of Texas taking home the team titles. This year’s win marks the Texas mens team’s 39th straight conference title over the course of Longhorn coaching legend Eddie Reese‘s 40-year long career at Texas. The Lady Longhorns notched a sixteenth Big 12 conference win.

Women’s 200 Back
Longhorn backstroke star Quinn Carrozza blew away the A final with her 1:53.18, nearly three seconds ahead of WVU’s Amelie Currat (1:55.75) and Kansas Jayhawk Elizabeth Amato-Hanner (1:56.27). Texas teammates Kaitlin Harty (1:56.39) and Maxine Wolters (1:57.28) took fourth and fifth while WVU’s Ally Vanneta (1:58.48) and UK’s Lauryn Parrish (1:58.56) followed behind. Taking eighth overall was WVU’s Maggie Miller (1:59.67).

Freshman Longhorn Austin Katz followed up his 100 backstroke victory last night with a win in the 200 distance tonight in an NCAA A cut time of 1:39.10. Texas took the next four places with Jonathan Roberts (1:39.76), Ryan Harty (1:40.77), Jeff Newkirk (1:42.02) and Josh Artmann (1:42.59). WVU took sixth with Luke Hene (1:46.51) while WVU’s Trayton Saladin and TCU’s Rada Duican tied for seventh in a time of 1:48.12.

Texas’ Kennedy Lohman followed up her 100 breast victory from last night with a swift 2:09.71 while her teammate Olivia Anderson threw down a 2:11.66 with WVU’s Emma Harris taking third in a time of 2:13.25. The Mountaineer breaststrokers continued to disappoint the Longhorns after Jake Armstrong‘s win in the 100 breast last night, with Tristen Disibio‘s victory in the 200 distance tonight with a 1:56.00 with Casey Melzer just behind in 1:56.06. Armstrong swum to a third place finish time with a 1:57.81. Sam Stewart produced a 1:57.83 to just get fourth by .02.

Joseph Schooling surprised no one by taking another Big 12 200 fly title, this time he swam a solid 1:42.23 ahead of WVU’s 1:42.50. Longhorn Sam Pomajevich took third in 1:44.38 ahead of WVU’s Ryan Kelly (1:47.87). TCU’s Matthew Spallas (1:48.17), Dayne Odendaal (1:48.77) and Carlos Hunnicut (1:48.90) took fifth through seventh.

There is no way Texas is even remotely rested for this meet. Besides Tate Jackson, who seems to be the exception, it seems like Haas, Schooling, and the rest of the crew are almost “cruising” their races.
This was not the Texas women’s 16th straight tittle. The Texas A&M women won in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 before they moved to the SEC.
no one cares about a 39th title when you have only 3 teams competing…seriously a broken clock is right twice a day…let them compete against some real teams and see what happens and blah blah 3 ncaa’s in a row…not a record either..just saying
Congratulations to them on excellent swimming, but somebody’s math is off or they need to rewrite the headline. The University of Texas was in the Southwest Conference up till 1996, 22 years ago. First Big 12 title was in 1997. Now, if the SWC titles are added in then it comes to 39. So a change in numbers or the way headline is written is necessary.
