2017 NCAA Division II Nationals Day 2 Prelims: Nunn Breaks NCAA Mark Leading Off Relay
Welcome to Swimming World’s live recap of the second day of prelims at the 2017 NCAA Division II Nationals in Birmingham, Alabama! The women’s meet looks to be close through the second day of competition again, with Drury and Queens separated by only one point heading into tonights finals. The Queens men, meanwhile, should extend their current point lead based on their placings this morning, but the battle for 2nd through 5th on the men’s side should tighten up after tonight. Check out the recap below to see all of the highlights from this morning’s session, including Bailee Nunn’s new NCAA record in the 50 free!

Women’s 200 Free Relay
Queens team of Lara Marshall (23.59), Kyrie Dobson (22.78), Shane Knight (23.21), and Michelle Prayson (22.94) took the top seed out of the morning heats with a 1:32.52. They were followed close behind by the team from Drury at 1:32.73 and MSU-Mankato at 1:32.97.
Notably, Drury freshman Bailee Nunn led off their relay in 22.33, a new NCAA record in the event. That is Nunn’s second NCAA record of this competition, as she anchored the NCAA record setting 200 medley relay for Drury yesterday in 21.83 after winning the 200 IM earlier in the night.

Women’s 400 IM
Northern State junior Hannah Kastigar took the top seed in the women’s 400 IM by 5 seconds, touching in 4:15.42 to knock 2.5 seconds off of her seed. Kastigar was third in the 200 IM last night, but if she can replicate her performance from this morning in finals tonight she may be able to move to the top of the podium.
Delta State senior Melanie Tombers will be the second seed with a 4:20.48, while runner-up in the 200 IM Alexis Divelbiss from Wingate will go in third with a 4:20.72. Drury and Queens both got swimmers in the championship final, which should keep the battle for the team title close.

Men’s 400 IM
While the 400 IM doesn’t have the same presence for Queens as the 200 IM did last night, they will have junior Nick Arakelian as the top seed heading into tonight’s finals with a 3:48.57. Arakelian is the defending NCAA champion in this event and current NCAA record holder with a 3:43.84 from 2015. He won the event with a 3:44.63 last year.
In 2nd will be Simon Fraser’s Adrian VanderHelm, who was 3rd in the 200 IM last night. Lindenwood sophomore Christian Vasquez, who was runner-up in this event last year, is seeded 3rd out of this morning with a 3:50.69. He will be joined by teammate Felix Eigel who snuck in as the 8th seed and should help the Lions stay in the team battle. Lindenwood is currently 6th overall as a team with 44 points, 33 points out of 2nd place.

Fresh off of her NCAA record in the 50 free leading off the 200 free relay, Drury freshman Bailee Nunn tied her seed with a 53.16 to take the top spot out of prelims this morning. Right behind her was West Florida senior Theresa Michalak, who won the 50 free last night.
Queens got a nice boost in their quest for the overall team title with two swimmers in the championship final to Drury’s one. Senior Hannah Peiffer (53.96) and Georgia DaCruz (53.98) will go into tonight’s final seeded 3rd and 4th. Notably, Wingate’s Ebba Stillman and Saint Leo’s Natalia Garriock will have to compete in a swim-off for 8th place after they tied in 54.67.

Queens continued to set themselves up to extend their lead tonight by grabbing the top two seeds in the men’s 100 fly. Junior Paul Pijulet will go into tonight as the #1 seed with a 45.74, while teammate Marius Kusch will go in 2nd with a 45.87. Women’s 400 Medley Relay
Once again, Queens and Drury finished 1-2 in the prelims of a relay event today, with the Queens team of Hannah Peiffer (55.62), Daria Talanova (1:02.66), Georgia DaCruz (53.27), and Kyrie Dobson (49.96) touching first in 3:41.51 and the Drury team of Yekaterina Rudenko (53.45), Zuzanna Chwadeczko (1:00.14), Abby Lunzmann (56.80), and Chrysoula Karamanou (51.21) finishing second in 3:41.60.
Drury has a lot of room to improve with this relay, as they can sub in Vera Johansson in the fly and Bailee Nunn in the free to put together a relay that could challenge Wingate’s NCAA record of 3:37.80. Expect this relay to be fast, as Queens and Drury will likely still be locked in a tight points battle going into this event tonight.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay
The Queens men took the top seed in the 400 medley relay, dropping a few tenths from their seed to touch in 3:10.34. The team of Zach Bunner (48.31), Rostyslav Fedyna (53.08), Marius Kusch (45.57), and Ben Mayes (43.38). The Royals will likely sub in Paul Pijulet on the backstroke leg tonight to give them a couple more seconds and within striking distance of the NCAA record from 2015.
Nova Southeastern will go into finals seeded 2nd tonight, and given Anton Lobanov’s 51.93 split from this morning the Sharks should be able to stay in the race tonight. Freshno Pacific (3:13.06) and Drury (3:13.07) will be right behind them tonight fighting for a spot on the podium.
