2017 arena Pro Swim Series Santa Clara: Olympians Top Podium Events on Night Two

Day two finals of the 2017 arena Pro Swim Series Santa Clara were highlighted by several members of the 2016 USA Olympic team.

Stanford’s Simone Manuel successfully defended her 100 free title, while Jack Conger edged fellow NCAA star Caeleb Dressel for victory in the 100 fly.

Women’s 100 Fly

Kelsi Worrell flew to a smooth victory in the women’s 100 fly, leading the ‘A’ final from start-to-finish. Worrell delivered a final time of 57.44, finishing more than a second and a half ahead of the competition. Her time improves upon her 2017 best of 57.50 from the Atlanta stop of the arena Pro Swim Series.

Second place was picked up by Hellen Moffitt, who delivered a strong 58.99 to hold off Cal’s Katie McLaughlin. McLaughlin grabbed the bronze with a 59.17.

Fellow Golden Bear Farida Osman turned in a final time of 59.36 for fourth, followed closely by Lauren Case’s 59.41.

Maggie MacNeil (1:00.31), Kathleen Baker (1:00.81), and Hang Yu Sze (1:00.85) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 100 Fly

The men’s 100 fly was a star-studded event complete with four 2016 Team USA Olympians.

NCAA All-Stars Jack Conger and Caeleb Dressel battled throughout the entire 100-meters, with Conger getting his hands to the wall a slim .05 seconds ahead of Dressel. Conger claimed gold with a 52.24, while Dressel grabbed silver with a 52.29. Conger’s time ties him for 20th in the 2017 world rankings with Russia’s Evgeny Koptelov.

Fellow Olympian and butterfly ace, Tom Shields, took third overall with a final time of 52.58, followed by Andrew Liang and his time of 52.98.

Gunnar Bentz finished fifth with a time of 53.03, just ahead of Tripp Cooper’s 53.14.

Justin Lynch (53.20), Santiago Grassi (53.28), and Pace Clark (53.66) were seventh through ninth respectively.

Women’s 200 Breast

Madisyn Cox surged to victory in the women’s 200 breast, moving up from her fourth place seed to claim the win by more than a second. Cox stopped the clock at a strong 2:25.62, entering the top 20 world rankings for 2017.

Top seed Emily Escobedo slid to second with a final time of 2:26.91, while Marina Garcia Urzainqui grabbed third with a time of 2:28.11.

Melissa Rodriguez turned in a fourth place finish of 2:28.21, followed by Esther Gonzalez Medina’s 2:28.86.

Riley Scott collected sixth with a time of 2:28.97, just ahead of Zoe Bartel and her time of 2:30.92.

Stanford teammates Kim Williams and Allie Szekely completed the ‘A’ final with times of 2:31.79 and 2:32.97 respectively.

Men’s 200 Breast

Josh Prenot and Nic Fink held a strong battle in finals of the men’s 200 breast, pushing one another throughout the race. Prenot pulled ahead within the final 50 meters, edging past Fink to claim victory with a 2:10.80. Prenot’s 2017 best sits at a 2:09.93 from the Indianapolis stop of the arena Pro Swim Series.

Fink settled for second and a time of 2:11.26.

Texas’ Will Licon turned in a 2:12.13 for the bronze medal, followed by Miguel de lara Ojeda’s fourth-place finish of 2:12.25.

Chase Kalisz of Georgia collected a narrow fifth over fellow 2016 Olympian Kevin Cordes. Kalisz finished with a time of 2:12.61 over Cordes’ 2:!2.67.

Louisville’s Carlos Claverie (2:13.39), Ryan Telford (2:18.61), and Frederik Kamminga (2:18.80) rounded out the ‘A’ final.

Women’s 100 Free

Stanford sprint stars Simone Manuel and Lia Neal topped the competition in finals of the women’s 100 free. The two Olympians posted times of 54.31 and 54.64 for first and second respectively. Today’s 100 free victory marks the third straight stop of the 2017 arena Pro Swim Series that Manuel has topped the competition.

Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey grabbed third overall with a 54.84, followed by Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil and her time of 55.47.

Rebecca Millard finished fifth overall with a 55.64, just ahead of Kelsi Worrell’s 55.80.

Cal teammates Amy Bilquist (55.86) and Katie McLaughlin (55.86), along with Sarah Fournier (56.00) completed the top heat.

Men’s 100 Free

Cal’s Nathan Adrian delivered some powerful outside smoke to claim victory in the men’s 100 free. Adrian made his move following the halfway mark, edging up from lane two to post a dominant victory of 48.55. His time sits close to his 2017 best of 48.18 from the Mesa stop of the arena Pro Swim Series, a time that has earned him fourth in the world rankings for 2017.

Caeleb Dressel of Florida dashed to a second place finish of 49.26, finishing just ahead of Michael Jensen. Jensen stopped the clock at a close 49.35 for the bronze.

Russian Olympian Vladimir Morozov picked up fourth-place finish of 49.40 after a three-way tie for eighth narrowly earned him a spot in the ‘A’ final.

Marcelo Chierighini grabbed fifth overall with a 49.47, followed by Frederico Grabich’s 49.65.

Yuri Kisil (49.98), Maxime Rooney (50.06), and  Conor Dwyer (50.58) were seventh through ninth respectively.

Women’s 400 Free

Katie Drabot dove in ready for a win in finals of the 400 free, holding off the field as she edged closer and closer to the finish. Drabot collected gold with a final time of 4:08.07, tying Australia’s Kiah Melverton at 20th in the world rankings for 2017.

Wisconsin Badger Cierra Runge delivered a second place finish of 2:10.64, while Leah Stevens and Ella Eastin posted close times of 4:14.03 and 4:14.19 for third and fourth.

Miranda Heckman touched fifth overall with a time of 4:14.25, while Kristen Kobrich was sixth with a 4:14.52.

Megan Byrnes and Meryn McCann took seventh and eighth with times of 4:14.79 and 4:14.85 respectively.

Canada’s Mackenzie Padington suffered a disqualification.

Men’s 400 Free

Texas’ Clark Smith jumped to an early lead in finals of the men’s 400 free, but was soon met by a charging Jay Litherland as the race neared completion. Smith was able to hold off Litherland to finish first with a time of 3:49.40, while Litherland collected second with a 3:50.96.

Marcela Acosta collected the bronze with a third-place finish of 3:52.49, just ahead of True Sweetser. Sweetser grabbed fourth with a close 3:52.83.

Fifth place went to Liam Egan who posted a final time of 3:53.17, followed by Ricardo Vargas Jacobo’s 3:55.23.

Jeremy Bagshaw (3:56.77), Matt Hutchins (3:56.99), and Grant Shoults (3:59.75) rounded out the ‘A’ final.

Today’s 100 free victory marks the third straight stop of the 2017 arena Pro Swim Series that Manuel has topped the competition………………..and still not under the top 10 in the world……zzzzzzzzzzz….oh and well see at trial if she # 1 in the World when she’s tapered…….NOT
