Cate Campbell started this morning off with an Olympic record in the women’s 100 freestyle with a 52.78. Her sister Bronte will join her in tonight’s semifinals. Simone Manuel was the second qualifier this morning. She will be joined by American teammate Abbey Weitzeil in semifinals.

Russia’s Evgeny Rylov was the fastest man in this morning’s 200 backstroke. Mitch Larkin, the Australian with the top time in the world this year was third.

Rikke Moller Pedersen of Denmark will be the top seed in semifinals of the women’s 200 breaststroke. Rie Kaneto of Japan qualified second.

In the men’s 200 IM, Ryan Lochte cruised to a top spot. Michael Phelps also swam a relaxed race for third. Philip Heintz of Germany slipped in between the American duo.

Highlighted by a 1:55.95 split from Allison Schmitt, the Americans return in the top spot for the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay.
