Women’s 100 fly

Alexandra Wenk raced her way to an Olympic berth with a 57.70 in the event.  That swim cleared the 58.35 German Olympic selection time, and moved her to 13th in the world rankings.

Additionally, her time broke her own German record of 57.76 set earlier today.

Aliena Schmidtke hit the wall second in a time of 58.57, just off the German selection time, while Franziska Hentke took third overall in 58.91.

No one managed to clear the German Olympic selection time of 51.94 as Steffen Deibler won the event in 52.16.  Marius Kusch hit the wall second overall in 52.17.

Philip Heintz (52.40) and Timo Zwiesigk (53.43) rounded out the top four in the finale tonight.

Dorothea Brandt punched her ticket to the Rio Olympics in the sprint free with a 24.66 for the win.  That time pushed her to 12th in the world, and cleared the German Olympic selection time of 24.94.

Nina Kost (25.36), Anna Dietterle (25.44), Helen Scholtissek (25.54) and Theresa Michalak (25.75) all battled for second.

Men’s 200 free

2009 World Champion Paul Biedermann is definitely in the middle of a career resurgence.  Tonight, Biedermann turned in a 1:45.45 in the men’s 200-meter free at the 2016 German Nationals to clinch an Olympic spot, but also jump to second in the world.

Only James Guy has been faster this year with a 1:45.19 from the British Championships.

Biedermann easily cleared the German Olympic selection time of 1:47.17.

Florian Vogel also earned an individual Olympic swim with a 1:46.44 to move to ninth in the world.

Christoph Fildebrandt (1:47.06) and Clemens Rapp (1:47.63) put themselves in line for relay duty in the 800 free relay.

Men’s 200 breast

Already the top-ranked swimmer in the world in the 200 breast with a 2:07.69 from the Luxembourg Euro Meet, Marco Koch clocked the second-best time this year at the 2016 German Nationals.

Koch raced his way to a time of 2:07.88, just off his best time this year, and easily under the German Olympic selection time of 2:10.43.

Fabian Schwingenschlogl, fresh off a strong NCAA performance for Missouri, took second in 2:11.52 to miss an Olympic spot in this event.

Max Pilger (2:12.01) and Christian vom Lehn (2:12.07) battled it out for third-place honors.

Bjorn Hornikel, meanwhile, just missed that selection time with a time of 22.31.  Maximilian Oswald wound up third in 22.53.
