Women’s 100-meter Back

Claire Adams of Carmel Swim Club led prelims of the women’s 100-meter back at USA Nationals with a superb 1:00.08. The time is a 1.04-second drop from her entry time, which was also seeded 11th at 1:01.12. Adams popped off a 29.30 on the first 50, and followed it up with a 30.78 second half. Georgia Davies fell one spot to claim second in 1:00.11. Davies started the race quicker than Adams with a 29.18, but faltered on the final lap with a 30.93.

Ali Deloof will be slated third heading into finals with a 1:00.35. Last night’s 100-meter fly champion Kelsi Worrell jumped from the 52nd seed to land fourth with a 1:00.38, a 2.38 second time drop. Olivia Smoliga (1:00.43) and Missouri’s Hannah Stevens (1:00.64) followed behind Worrell to take fifth and sixth, respectively. Clara Smiddy and Danielle Galyer tied for seventh with a 1:01.10.

The B final will feature Amy Bliquist (1:01.36), Ally Howe (1:01.41), Kathleen Dawson (1:01.47), Tasija Karosas (1:01.53), Caroline Baldwin (1:01.55), Kaitlin Harty (1:01.57), Bonnie Brandon (1:01.60), and Bridgette Alexander (1:01.60).

Men’s 200-meter Free

Jack Conger vaulted from the 20th seed to take prelims of the men’s 200-meter free in 1:47.62 at USA Nationals. Conger’s time bested the top seed time entering the meet, which was a 1:48.29 belonging to Townley Haas. Conger made a statement on the first 50-meters, being the only competitor under the 25-second mark. From there, he didn’t look back:

Conger: 24.86/27.37/28.28/27.11

Blake Pieroni (1:48.10) and Frank Dyer (1:48.64) claimed the next two slots heading into finals, while Maxime Rooney’s 1:48.68 allowed him to jump ten spots to take fourth. Haas fell to fifth in 1:48.74. Trevor Carroll (1:48.78) and Michael Wynalda (1:48.79) touched one after the other for sixth and seventh. Tom Kremer clinched the final spot in the top heat with his 1:48.88.

Last night’s 400-meter free national champion Zane Grothe was 0.01 from vying for a spot in the championship final. Instead, his 1:48.89 landed him the top seed in the B final. New Stanford commit Grant Shoults wound up tenth in 1:49.33. Long Gutierrez (1:49.35), Justin Glanda (1:49.38), Max Litchfield (1:49.58), Ieauan Lloyd (1:49.72), Austin Surhoff (1:49.87), and Jonathan Roberts (1:50.05) also made the consolation final.

Men’s 100-meter Back

Junya Koga clocked a 53.63 100-meter back time in prelims at USA Nationals to secure the top spot heading into tonight’s championship final. Koga is riding on a wave of moment after breaking the US Open Record in the 50-meter back in a time trial yesterday. His 24.36 yesterday broke his own mark of 24.50. In today’s race, Koga splashed to a 25.81 start and punctuated the race with a 27.82 second half.

Nick Thoman, the top seed entering the meet, posted a 54.03 to take second place. Thoman split a 26.87/27.16, and will need a faster first 50 to keep pace with Koga at finals. Luke Kaliszak swam a 54.32 to claim third. Arkady Vyatchanin touched right behind Kaliszak with a 54.32. Vyatchanin and Kaliszak both swam 26.51 on the first half of the race.

Kyle Darmody (54.43), Jacob Pebley (54.58), Jack Blyzinsky (54.58), and Taylor Dale (54.69) also qualified for the championship final heat.

Landing a second swim in the B final are Eugene Godsoe (54.72), Christopher Reid (54.99), Nic Graesser (55.01), Joe Patching (55.13), Jake Taylor (55.28), Michael Andrew (55.34), Henrique Machado (55.40), and Austin Quinn (55.45).

Women’s 200-meter Free

Allison Schmitt held on to her top seed in the women’s 200-meter free at USA Nationals this morning. Schmitt finished ahead of Hali Flickinger, who swam a full slate of events last night. Flickinger clocked a 1:58.54 and had a stronger second half than Schmitt.

Schmitt:     27.70/29.43/30.79/30.20

Flickinger: 28.47/29.78/30.23/30.06

Yesterday, Schmitt was the top seed entering finals in the 400-meter free, but dropped all the way to fifth. A slower second half marred her race last night, and it could provide Flickinger a chance to move up a spot tonight.

Sarah Henry (1:59.42) and Katie Drabot (1:59.47) took third and fourth, but are only separated by a thin margin. Madisyn Cox, who silvered in last night’s 200 IM, claimed fifth with a 1:59.90. Haley Lips (2:00.08), Hannah Cox (2:00.43), and Alexa Davis (2:00.51) rounded out the top eight.

The consolation final will feature Melanie Klaren (2:00.64), Courtney Harnish (2:00.71), Megan Moroney (2:00.71), Megan Romano (2:00.96), Jessica Hespeler (2:01.10), Lindsay Vrooman (2:01.13), Yawen Hou (2:01.17), and Alex Norris (2:01.17).

Men’s 200-meter Fly

Michael Phelps controlled prelims of the men’s 200-meter fly with a top time of 1:55.15 at USA Nationals, after entering the meet as the eighth-fastest seed. His heavily anticipated return to USA Nationals marks another step on his comeback trail towards Rio in 2016. He dropped 2.47 seconds from his prelims time to clinch the top slot heading into finals.

Phelps’s time would have placed him third in prelims at the FINA World Championships in Kazan behind Laszlo Cseh and Viktor Bromer. Phelps demonstrated composure in his splits, and should see another drop tonight.

Phelps: 25.92/28.93/29.82/30.48

Jack Conger took second with a 1:56.19, and was followed by Pace Clark’s 1:57.39. Clark Smith (1:57.59) and Dakota Hodgson (1:58.38) took fourth and fifth, respectively. The top seed entering the meet Andrew Seliskar ended prelims sixth in 1:58.58. Carlos Peralta Gallego (1:58.81) and John Martens (1:58.82) rounded out the top eight.

The B Final will include Christian McCurdy (1:58.84), Sam McHugh (1:58.84), Gunnar Bentz (1:58.85), Cameron Brodie (1:58.90), Adam Hinshaw (1:58.99), Zach Harting (1:59.09), Thomas Luchsinger (1:59.13), and Justin Lynch (1:59.31).
