Michael Duderstadt, Auburn Men Continue To Roll
The No. 7 Auburn men made a statement against No. 17 Wisconsin and Florida State. The Tigers downed the Badgers 187-133 and the Seminoles 223-76.
Coming off a loss to No. 9 Florida, the No. 11 Auburn women fell to No. 17 Wisconsin by a score of 158-141. The Tigers were able to take down Florida State, winning 234-65.
A close women’s 200-yard medley relay started the day. Wisconsin out touched Auburn by only 12-tenths of a second. The Badger team of backstroker Jessica Unicomb, breaststroker Anna Meinholz, butterflier Dana Grindall and freestyler Chase Kinney touched the wall in 1:39.51.
The Tigers dominated in the men’s race, taking first and second place. The top Auburn team finished a full two seconds ahead of Florida State and Wisconsin. The winning Tigers’ team consisted of backstroker Kyle Darmody, breaststroker Michael Duderstadt, butterflier Arthur Mendes and freestyler Peter Holoda. They posted a time of 1:26.13.
Auburn’s Justin Youtsey was a key contributor in the Tigers’ win. The senior took first place in the men’s one-meter and three-meter diving competitions. Duderstadt also picked up two wins, taking the 100-yard breaststroke (53.39) and 100-yard freestyle (43.89).
On the women’s side, the Badgers were led by Danielle Valley. The junior picked up wins in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:45.44), 500-yard freestyle (4:47.39) and 400-yard individual medley (4:17.09).
Natasha Lloyd had a big day for the Auburn women. Lloyd, a junior, won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.01) and took second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.08).
Wisconsin took first in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay, knocking off Auburn’s top team by over a second. The Badger team of Unicomb, Kinney, Annie Tamblyn and Marissa Berg posted a winning time of 3:20.27.
Auburn took the men’s race with a time of 2:56.14. The Tigers’ team consisted of Mendes, Holoda, Jacob Molacek and Zach Apple.
“Both the men and women showed up today to race and compete,” Auburn coach Brett Hawke said in a press release. “The men are gaining confidence each meet they go into. Beating Florida last week really gave them a boost and you can tell they have really gone to another level and that’s a good thing going into SECs.”
The Tigers do not swim again until Southeastern Conference Championships.
