ORLANDO – The 2015 NCSA junior nationals promised to be a fast meet, based on the names on the psych sheet, and Matthew Hirschberger of Nation’s Capital delivered on that promise in the first event by breaking a U.S. national age group record in the 1000-yard freestyle tonight.
Hirschberger, 16, nearly lapped the entire timed final heat to post an 8:45.11, breaking the 33-year-old record of 8:49.97 in the 15-16 age group held by Jeff Kostoff since 1982. That means two generations of swimmers have gone through the sport and have been unable to surpass Kostoff, who was a star in distance freestyle as a youngster before making the 1984 and 1988 Olympics in the 400 IM.

The time also puts Hirschberger in position to break the 17-18 national age group record when he ages up later this year. That record is also held by Kostoff at 8:48.57. Before today, Hirschberger’s lifetime best was 8:58.21, swum just four months ago at the Tom Dolan Invitational.
