Marks Fall in 100 Fly at Maria Lenk Championships -- May 3, 2007
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 3. IN a quick preliminary session at the Maria Lenk Championships held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from May 1-6, a pair of Brazilians set national and regional marks in the 100 fly events.
Daiene Dias clocked a 1:00.63 in the women's 100 fly to set the South American and Brazilian standards in the event. That surpassed the previous effort of 1:00.92 set by Gabriella Silva on Sept. 7, 2006.
Meanwhile, Kaio Almeida knocked down the Brazilian and Championship record in the men's event with a 51.99 in prelims as well. The time eclipsed a pair of times set by Gabriel Mangabeira (Brazilian record of 52.33 at the 2004 Olympics and Championship record of 52.76 set May 6, 2004).
In finals, only Rodrigo Castro clocked a record with a Championship-standard time of 1:49.71 in the men's 200 freestyle.
Female winners included Monique Ferreira (200 free – 2:02.25), Dias (100 fly – 1:00.76), Fabiola Molina (50 back – 29.42) and Georgina Bardach (400 IM – 4:47.04).
For the men, Mangabeira won the 100 fly in 53.38 after Almeida pulled out. Additionally, Guilherme Guido (50 back – 26.03) and Thiago Pereira (400 IM – 4:20.11) also claimed titles.
