American Stop Upcoming for Leisel Jones

MELBOURNE, Australia, May 3. ACCORDING to a report in the Melbourne Herald Sun, Leisel Jones and her new teammates under coach Rohan Taylor will make a trip to the United States this summer to compete in a handful of invitational competitions. The article indicates that Jones will race in the United States in July, which likely means an appearance at the Janet Evans Invitational or the Santa Clara Grand Prix, perhaps both.

The newspaper story suggests that Taylor has decided on this plan of attack because it will allow Jones, the world-record holder in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, to race against top American competition. Obviously, Taylor is referring to the likes of Tara Kirk, Megan Jendrick and Jessica Hardy, provided they race in those summer events. By opting for the U.S. circuit, Jones will bypass the Mare Nostrum Series.

Jones recently won gold at the World Championships in the 100 and 200 breast events, along with the 400 medley relay. She also earned a silver medal in the 50 breaststroke, finishing behind Hardy. At the Duel in the Pool, however, Jones suffered an unusual loss, as she was beaten to the wall by Kirk. Now, it looks as if those rivalries will heat up a bit in California.

Jones, who recently moved to Taylor's Melbourne camp after leaving Stephan Widmer, is expected to be joined on her U.S. trek by Sarah Katsoulis, Shayne Reese and Danni Miatke.
