This week’s ZUMO Performance of the Week goes to Daiya Seto for his world leading 400 IM at the 2019 Hamamatsu Bay Long Course Champs in Japan.

Seto was extremely impressive in the 400 IM this weekend, throwing down a dominate 4:09.25 to take the top time in the world by more than 9 seconds. Seto was the World Champion in this event in 2015, but has yet to return to the top of the podium in a long course meet since then despite winning short course World titles in 2016 and 2018.

This swim shows a nice return to form for Seto in the long course pool that could show he is ready to return to the top of the podium at his home Olympics in 2020. A 4:09 in January is nothing to sneeze at, and his time from this weekend is faster than his bronze medal winning time from the 2016 Rio Olympics and is less than a tenth off of what he swam when he grabbed bronze at 2017 Worlds.

And if that wasn’t enough of a confidence boost, also in the race this weekend was teammate and reigning Olympic Champion Kosuke Hagino, who was well behind Seto in second with a 4:15.79. For reference, that time is still good for the top time in the world this year.

This continues a strong winter season for Seto, who also got a performance of the week nod for his short course 200 fly world record at the 2018 Short Course World Championships. Seto also won the 200 IM at the Hamamatsu LC Champs 1:56.98 for another #1 time in the world, passing Chase Kalisz’s 1:57.68 from the TYR Pro Series meet in Knoxville.

Congratulations to Daiya Seto on earning ZUMO’s Performance of the Week!
