Zone Diving Roundup Central: Final Update

PHOENIX, Arizona. THROUGHOUT this weekend, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com will offer in-depth coverage of zone diving qualifying as it happens around the country. These meets will impact both NCAA Division I meets as the diving slots at each meet are filled up.

Zone A Roundup (March 14-16): 5 Men/5 Women Slots
Host: Buffalo
First Day
Pitt's Alex Volovetski (771.55) and Jeremy Stultz (738.40) clinched their spots at NCAAs with first and second on the three-meter.

On the women's side, Drexel's Kate Hynes won the one-meter with 599.05 points, while Rider's Amanda Burke took second with 553.10 to capture the first two spots to NCAAs from the zone.

Second Day
Yale's Jeff Lichtenstein snatched one of Zone A's five spots with a third-place tally of 629.55 on the one-meter.

Meanwhile, Harvard's Samantha Papadakis and Boston's Tess Waresmith punched their ticket to NCAAs after the three-meter.

Third Day
The final two male divers earned NCAA transfer spots as Princeton's Stuart Malcolm and Buffalo's Michael McDowell will competed in Federal Way.

Meanwhile, Buffalo's Meile Carpenter claimed the last NCAA berth from Zone A with a victory on the platform.

Zone B Roundup (March 14-16): 10 Men/12 Women Slots
Host: Auburn
First Day
Four women punched their tickets to NCAAs in the one-meter. Taryn Zack of South Carolina won with 584.20 points, while Lauren LeRoy of Tennessee took second with 563.45 points. Brittany Viola of Miami (558.95) and Hannah Moore of Georgia (558.30) also earned spots.

For the men, Chris Colwill of Georgia (873.15), Reuben Ross of Miami (750.55), Dan Mazzaferro of Auburn (750.35) and JJ Kinzbach of Miami (719.60) made it to NCAAs as the top four finishers from the three-meter.

Second Day
For the men, Terry Horner of Florida State (710.80), Stephen Andrews of Kentucky (697.10) and Aaron Fleshner of Alabama earned spots at NCAAs after the one-meter

Four women moved on to NCAAs after the second day of diving in the one-meter. Kentucky's Kari Retrum (581.60), LSU's Rachel Ware, Florida's Jeana Bartell (560.15) and Georgia Tech's Hannah Krimm (530.60) each earned spots.

Third Day
The final day of diving on the platform for the women witnessed four more student-athletes make their way to Columbus. North Carolina State's Kristen Davies, Georgia Tech's Stephanie England, Florida State's Aleia Monden and Florida's Monica Dodson earned NCAA spots.

Meanwhile, Auburn's Kelly Marx, Virginia Tech's Michael McDonald and North Carolina's Ryan Funderburk grabbed the final three transfer spots from the zone after the final day of diving.

Zone C Roundup (March 14-16): 7 Men/9 Women Slots
Host: Ohio State
First Day
Three women moved on to NCAAs from the one-meter contest as Ashley Karnes of Purdue (594.20), Bianca Alvarez of Ohio State (587.15) and Brittney Feldman of Indiana (579.40) placed in the top three.

For the men, Ryan Jefferson of Ohio State (684.65), Wes Wieser of Ohio State (676.50) and Michael Bulfin of Notre Dame (666.35) finished in the top three in the three-meter to snatch their berths at NCAAs.

Second Day
The Hoosier State picked up three NCAA spots as Indiana's Taylor Roberts (697.40) and Landon Marzullo (688.45) as well as Purdue's David Colturi (672.95) took the top three placings in the one-meter.

Four more women grabbed NCAA spots in the three-meter. Ohio State's Chelsea Davis (615.90) and Kristen Asman (580.25) finished second and fifth, while Michigan's Elyse Lee (601.65) and Toledo's Megan McKinley (595.55) took third and fourth. Additionally, although already qualified, Purdue's Ashley Karnes won the event with 692.75 points.

Third Day
Sean Moore of Ohio State clinched the final male transfer spot from Zone C with his second-place effort on the platform. He posted a final tally of 777.00, while Purdue's David Colturi won with 849.60 points.

The Boilermaker women must have been living right as both Kara Cook and Kathleen Berg of Purdue clinched NCAA berths on the final day of diving.

Zone D Roundup (March 14-16): 5 Men/8 Women Slots
Host: Houston
First Day
Gregory Destephen of Missouri and Jonathan Wilcox of Texas earned their spot at NCAAs in the first day of men's three-meter competition. Destephen won with 707.90 points, while Wilcox placed second with 707.55 points.

Meanwhile, Texas earned a pair of NCAA spots for the women as Mary Yarrison (602.60) and Kathryn Kelly (546.90) took first and third. Houston's Courtney Forcucci also made it to Columbus with a second-place 566.25.

Second Day
Houston's Ginni Van Katwijk (641.05) and Lacey Truelove (637.10) as well as Missouri's Kendra Melnychuk (621.80) and Madison Palmer of Arkansas (538.00) transfered to the NCAAs after the three-meter.

The Longhorns enjoyed the second day of men's diving as they added two more spots with Matt Cooper (657.85) and Mike Wong (648.90) making their way to NCAAs.

Third Day
Dante Jones of Missouri punched his ticket to Federal Way with a second-place finish on the platform.

Meanwhile, SMU enjoyed a strong final day as Audra Egenolf will head to Columbus for their team.

Zone E Roundup (March 14-16): 8 Men/7 Women Slots
Host: Air Force
First Day
In the men's three-meter competition, Michele Benedetti of Arizona State, Nathan Kim of Stanford and Mats Wiktorsson of Hawaii punched their ticket to the big dance. Benedetti won with 733.55 points, while Kim took second with 691.60 points. Wiktorsson finished third with 689.15 points.

For the women in the one-meter, Margaret Hostage of Stanford, Candice Minette of Nevada and Tawni Jones of BYU earned their spots to NCAAs. Hostage won with 577.05 points, while Minette took second with 529.90. Jones finished third with 508.10 points.

Second Day
Marisa Samaniego of UCLA and Emma Friesen of Hawaii made their way to Columbus on the three-meter. Samaniego won with 632.15 points, while Friesen took third with 599.20 points. Margaret Hostage of Stanford had already secured her spot, but took second with 602.45 points.

For the men on the one-meter, three divers claimed transfer spots to NCAAs. Magnus Frick of Hawaii (726.00), Richard Helvie of California (708.00) and Ben Grado of Arizona (667.80) took the top three spots in the event.

Third Day
After the final day of platform diving, two more divers completed the men's field with Steven Starks of Southern California and Aaron Feight of Denver moving on to NCAAs.

Stanford then pushed its women's tally to three as Shana Karp and Sarah Ohr also wound up making it to NCAAs at the end of the day.
