Zhang Lin Competing at National Youth Championships in Last Ditch Effort for FINA A Cut

BEIJING, China, May 8. AFTER missing out on making the Chinese Olympic squad during China's National Championships and Olympic Trials last month, world record holder Zhang Lin will be making a last-ditch effort to qualify for the 2012 London Games during China's National Youth Swimming Championships later this month according to local media outlets.

Zhang has signed up to compete in the 100, 200 and 400-meter freestyle events, and will be gunning for the FINA A cut in the events, hoping to join the Chinese contingent in London later this summer. As explained during the Chinese Olympic Trials, that meet was not the final arbiter for who made the Olympic squad.

“We will not take [Trials] as the final word for selection,” Deputy Director Shang Xiutang told local reporters. “It is just a part of a series of selection criteria that is part of a comprehensive assessment program.”

Zhang owns the world record in the men's 800-meter freestyle, and is the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the men's 400 free from the 2008 Beijing Games. After swimming for his coaches Zhang Yadog and Chen Yinghong early in his career, he also has worked with Australia's Denis Cotterell and Trojan's Dave Salo.
