The Indiana men captured first place in the 400 medley relay Thursday evening at the NCAA championships. Ian Finnerty took over the lead on breaststroke, and his teammates held on. The team of Gabriel Fantoni, Finnerty, Vini Lanza and Zach Apple combined to swim a time of 2:59.70, the second-fastest 400 medley relay in history.

After the race, the four men went through each of their swims and what it meant to bring the relay title to the Hoosiers. They explained that they knew Finnerty’s breaststroke leg was critical for getting ahead of the field. Apple explained that when he dove in with the lead, he remembered that no one else in the field could catch him since no one else had ever swum a 48.0 long course 100 free.
