York’s Meghan Small Sizzles on Night 3 of YMCAs

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, April 5. YORK's girls took down a trio of YMCA records, while Somerset Valley also chipped in a boys mark during the third night of action at the YMCA Short Course National Championships.

York's Courtney Harnish (23.37), Niki Price (23.29), Victoria Griffin (23.07) and Meghan Small (22.32) opened the night with a YMCA record in the women's 200-yard free relay as the foursome clocked a 1:32.05. That swim smashed the previous mark of 1:33.26 set by Triangle Area back in 2006. Middle Tyger's Katrina Konopka (22.97), Ali Snover (22.95), Ali Galyer (23.82) and Jessi Snover (23.16) also cleared the previous record with a second-place 1:32.90. Sunbury rounded out the top three in 1:33.27.

Meghan Small followed up with another YMCA record in the women's 200-yard back. She clocked a 1:54.76, beating the 1:55.45 set by Middle Tyger's Annie Gillig back in 2009. Teammate Kacey Oberlander finished just behind with a 1:55.31 for second, while Countryside's Emily Slabe earned third in 1:58.27.

York snagged its third YMCA record as Oberlander (54.88), Small (1:02.94), Price (53.25) and Victoria Griffin (49.53) obliterated the women's 400-yard medley relay record with a 3:40.60. That swim blasted the 3:43.09 set by Middle Tyger in 2011. Middle Tyger's Ali Galyer (55.18), Bay Prewette (1:03.34), Jessi Snover (54.54) and Katrina Konopka (49.43) took second with a 3:42.49 under the former record. Sarasota picked up third in 3:44.08.

Somerset Valley's Dylan Sali (48.92), Zack Warner (54.46), David Chung (49.62) and Brad Zdroik (45.14) clipped the YMCA record in the men's 400-yard medley relay with a 3:18.14. That swim edged the 3:18.89 set by Schroeder back in 2009. Wilton (3:22.34) and Red Bank (3:24.02) completed the top three.

Triangle Area's Colin Ellington, Seth Maslowski, Ben Mayes and Bailey Maloney touched out Somerset Valley's Jesse Novak, Andrew Nesbitt, David Chung and Brad Zdroik, 1:22.68 to 1:22.99, for the men's 200-yard free relay victory. Ocean County earned third in 1:23.09.

Sarasota's Bethany Leap came close to the YMCA record in the women's 100-yard breast with a winning 1:01.71. Leah Pronschinske's 1:01.43 from 2010 held up to the challenge. Springfield's Kendra Crew touched second in 1:02.26, while Lakeland Hills' Abby Fisher finished third in 1:02.42.

Door County's Conner McHugh prevailed in the men's 100-yard breast with a triumphant time of 54.03, while Somerset Valley's Zack Warner placed second in 55.05. Wilton's Eric Ronda clinched third-place honors in 55.12. Sarasota's Alex Katz grabbed the men's 200-yard back crown with a time of 1:45.49. Somerset Valley's Dylan Sali placed second in 1:46.18, while Cuyahoga's Andrew Appleby claimed third in 1:47.55.

Sarasota's Danielle Valley kept on rolling as she claimed her third title of the meet with a 4:42.36 in the women's 500-yard free. York's 13-year-old phenom Harnish took second in 4:45.15, while Schroeder's Cassy Jernberg picked up third in 4:48.31.

York's Brandon Flynn clinched the men's 500-yard free title in 4:26.60. Hickory's Sava Turcanu finished second in 4:28.50, while Katz rounded out the top three in 4:28.58.
