YMCA Short Course National Championships: Several Meet Records Fall

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 6. THE first night of the YMCA Short Course National Championships featured several meet records being rewritten.

On the women's side of the meet, Springfield's Margo Geer set a meet record of 22.68 in the finals of the 50 free. That effort cleared Emily Lloyd's prelim time of 22.70, which in turn cleared the 23.08 set by Stefanie Williams of Bloomsburg in 1998.

Geer then eclipsed the 100 back record with a 54.66 in prelims before dropping a swift 54.19 during finals. The effort crushed the previous record of 54.90 set by Candace Cooper of Triangle Area in 2008. Middle Tyger's Annie Gillig (54.37) and Cheshire's Lauren Solernou (54.61) also eclipsed the record with a second and third-place finish.

In other women's action, Middle Tyger's Haley Lips collected top honors in the 500 free with a 4:45.73. Sarasota's Corinne Showalter just missed the meet record of 2:00.23 set by Brittany Johnson in the 200 IM in 2003 when she won the sprint medley in 2:00.26.

Middle Tyger's Gillig, Caroline Fore, Lips and Addie Carne completed the night with a winning time of 1:44.35 in the 200 medley relay.

For the guys, Montgomery's Woody Joye pipped the 200 IM meet record with a 1:47.09. The readout clipped the previous record by the slimmest of margins as Dan Trupin's 1:47.10 set during 2001 for Champaign County fell.

Schroeder's Mitchell Friedemann, William Colbert, Francisco Vital and Graham Charlton clocked a record-breaking time of 1:30.91 in the 200 medley relay, which wiped out the 1:31.74 set by M.E. Lyons back in 2001.

Meanwhile, Bath Area's James Wells won the 50 free in 20.50, while Sarasota's Patrick Ceddie claimed the 500 free in 4:24.73. Wells returned to grab the 100 back in 47.70 for a double.
