YMCA Short Course Championships: Sarasota Wins Combined Team Title

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 8. THE YMCA Short Course Championships came to a close with several more YMCA records going into the ledger.

Sarasota won the combined team title with 749 points, while Middle Tyger took second with 736.5 points. Triangle Area (624), Wilton (549.5) and York (341) rounded out the top five.

Sarasota's Nicholas Caldwell chimed in with a YMCA record time of 15:10.16 to win the men's 1650 free. That time clipped the 15:10.41 set by Charlie Houchin back in 2006. Wilton's Robby Harder earned second in 15:12.55, while Sarasota's Derek Pridemore finished third in 15:23.24.

York's Hali Flickinger clocked a YMCA record time of 1:56.70 in the women's 200 fly for the win. She edged Leah Gingrich's 2008 mark of 1:56.75. Middle Tyger's Haley Lips finished second in 1:59.09, while Waynesboro's Remedy Rule, 14, wound up third in 1:59.26.

Wilton's Christian Higgins turned in a 53.69 to lower the YMCA record in the men's 100 breast. That performance cleared the 54.27 set by Schroeder's William Colbert in 2009. Red Bank's Harrison Cefalo touched second in 55.74, while Eau Claire's Alex DeLakis placed third in 55.75.

Sarasota's Danielle Valley claimed the women's 1650 free title in 16:10.19, while ME Lyons' Molly Hazelbake touched second in 16:34.39. Sarasota's Cha-cha Bugatti earned third in 16:40.55.

Triangle Area picked up the top two spots in the men's 200 fly with a 1:47.13 from Dominick Glavich and a 1:47.87 from Kevin Rogers. Wyckoff's Leo Lim completed the top three in 1:48.40.

Eau Claire's Leah Pronschinske just missed her YMCA record of 1:01.43 from 2010 with a winning time of 1:01.95 in the women's 100 breast finale tonight. Lynchburg's Susanna White touched second in 1:02.18, while Western North Carolina's Emily Marett grabbed third in 1:03.46.

In relay action, Birmingham's Jayne Pulte, Taylor Steffl, Maggie Pyett and Nikki Barczak won the women's 200 free relay in 1:33.83, while Triangle Area's Joe Bonk, Dominick Glavich, Kevin Rogers and Nathan Walters downed the YMCA record in the men's 200 free relay with a 1:22.58. That effort nipped the 1:22.64 set by Wilton back in 2005.

Middle Tyger's Kendall Crawford, Monica Milici, Haley Lips and Katrina Konopka won the women's 400 medley relay in a YMCA record 3:43.09. That time bested the 3:44.38 set by Middle Tyger back in 2009. Triangle Area's Kevin Rogers, Seth Connor, Dominick Glavich and Joe Bonk claimed the men's 400 medley relay title in 3:20.14
