YMCA Short Course Championships: Christian Higgins Downs YMCA Record, Haley Lips and Nicholas Caldwell Double

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 6. THE YMCA Short Course Championships kept on rolling in Fort Lauderdale as a quartet of YMCA records tumbled.

Wilton went 1-2 in the men's 200 breast with Christian Higgins downing his 2010 YMCA record of 1:57.61 with a strong prelim time of 1:55.81. He returned during the finale for the win with a 1:56.29. Teammate Eric Ronda placed second in 1:59.55, while Red Bank's Harrison Cefalo touched third in 2:00.43.

Middle Tyger's Haley Lips hit the wall in 54.42 to win the women's 100 fly. West North Carolina's Tori Oslund clocked a 54.74 for second, while Greater Flint's Courtney Weaver posted a third-place 54.81. Lips doubled up with a 1:47.24 to win the women's 200 free. Cheshire's Elizabeth McDonald placed second in 1:48.35, while York's Sada Stewart posted a third-place 1:48.60.

Sarasota's Nicholas Caldwell won the men's 200 free in 1:36.86, just missing the YMCA record of 1:36.41 set by Dan Trupin back in 2001. Countryside's Steven Zimmerman placed second in 1:38.39, while Triangle Area's Joe Bonk earned third in 1:38.87. Caldwell went on to set a YMCA record with an 8:55.55 in the men's 1000 free for the win. Sarasota's Derek Pridemore took second in 9:07.95, while Wilton's Robby Harder posted a third-place 9:09.06.

Sarasota's Danielle Valley nabbed the women's 1000 free title in 9:43.01, while York's Hali Flickinger posted a 9:47.35 for second. Sarasota's Taylor Katz earned third in 9:52.35.

Orlando's Nicholas Lowe touched in 49.07 to win the men's 100 fly. Triangle Area's Dominick Glavich (49.11) and Middle Tyger's David Ingraham (49.44) placed second and third. Lakeland Hills' Abby Fisher touched out Wilton's K.C. Moss, 2:13.65 to 2:13.75, in the women's 200 breast. Somerset Hills' Greta Leberfing finished third in 2:16.75.

In relay racing, Middle Tyger's Kendall Crawford, Katrina Konopka, Danielle Galyer and Lips set a YMCA record in the women's 400 free relay with a 3:22.15. That effort beat the 3:24.21 set by Middle Tyger back in 2009. Triangle Area's Dominick Glavich, Nathan Walters, Kevin Rogers and Joe Bonk claimed the men's 400 free relay with a YMCA record time of 3:01.23. That swim bettered the 3:01.34 set by Schroeder YMCA back in 2009.
