YMCA National Long Course Championships: Verity Abel, Sava Turcanu Claim Distance Crowns on Night One

ATLANTA, Georgia, July 23. THE first night of the YMCA National Long Course Championships kicked off with the men's and women's 1500m freestyles at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

Wilton's Verity Abel took home the women's mile in 17:04.29, nearly five seconds in front of ME Lyons' Shaylynn Spelman, who finished in 17:09.23. India Boland of North Shore rounded out the top three in 17:09.49.

The men's mile featured an intriguing battle between Hickory's Sava Turcanu, Wilton's Matthew Moen and Somerset Hills' Bradley Wachenfeld. Turcanu led throughout the race, with Moen and Wachenfeld battling for second. On the last length, Wachenfeld and Moen turned up the heat, out-splitting Turcanu by up to two seconds. However, neither swimmer could close the gap, as Turcanu got to the wall first in 16:08.23, with Moen a hair behind in 16:08.37. Wachenfeld touched third in 16:09.00.

Wilton YMCA leads the team standings after day one with 77 points, followed by Waynesboro (51) and Countryside Ralph Stolle (46).
