YMCA National Championships: Second Night Comes to Close

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 2. THE second night of the YMCA National Championships came to a close with a few near misses as a few national records almost fell.

Women's Meet
Haley Lips, 14, of Middle Tyger claimed the 100 fly title with a time of 55.01, defeating Shannon Draves, 17, of Boyertown (55.22) and Jenni Dole of Spokane (55.32).

Laura Johnson, 17, of Montgomery cruised to victory in the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.09, while Erica Lynn, 17, of Edwardsville took second in 2:18.50.

Corinne Showalter, 17, of Sarasota won by nearly a second in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.55, while teammate Ashlee Linn, 15, finished second in 1:49.45.

Kelly Ann Baird, 16, of Winston-Salem emerged from the 1000 free with a time of 9:49.37 for the win, while Cha-Cha Bugatti, 14, of Sarasota took second in 9:56.22.

Sarasota's 400 free relay team of Linn, Showalter, Katheryne Muth and Sara Conner came extremely close to breaking the YMCA record with a time of 3:24.31. Wilton Family's 1988 standard of 3:24.28 remained on the books.

Men's Meet
Tim Phillips, 17, of Marietta walked away with the 100 fly crown with a time of 48.32, while Peter Geissinger of Darien placed second in 49.13.

Scott Marino of Fanwood Scotch held off Harrison Cefalo, 15, of Red Bank, 2:03.13 to 2:03.81, in the 200 breast.

Morgan Priestley, 17, of Birmingham, who won a pair of titles yesterday, claimed his third with a time of 1:36.54 in the 200 free. Evan Reed of Upper Main Line took second in 1:38.34.

Luke Bushman, 17, of Green Bay dominated the 1000 free with a time of 9:12.17, while Austin Detra of Sarasota finished second in 9:18.48.

Middle Tyger's Greg Morgan, Lee Groseclose, David Ingraham and Chris Reinke won the 400 free relay in 3:05.62.
