Connecticut’s Corey Gambardella of Soundview YMCA and Guilford High School has given his verbal commitment to swim for Indiana University starting next fall.

Gambardella said of his decision,

“Right from the beginning Indiana seemed like the place for me. I took my first of four recruiting trips to Indiana and throughout the whole process I felt that the team and program was a genuine fit. Nowhere else did I get the same warm welcome as I did at Indiana which made me feel highly accepted. Combine that with the great academics, a beautiful campus, and talented swimmers it was hard to refuse the opportunity.”

His top times are (SCY/LCM):

  • 100 Fly 48.66/ 54.97
  • 200 Fly 1:46.43/ 2:01.52
  • 200 Free 1:40.63/1:58.75
  • 500 Free 4:41.64/ 4:12.48

Gambardella had a big summer, taking home YMCA National Titles in the 100 (55.09) and 200 (2:02.63) butterfly events. He was actually faster than his winning YNats time when he touched in 47th at Olympic Trials with a 2:01.96. At short course YMCA Nationals last April, Gambardella was fourth in the 100 fly and finished runner up in the 200.

Gambardella should see some success at the Big Ten level next fall. His best 200 butterfly time would have made him a B finalist last year. In the 100 butterfly, he would have finished just shy of a C final swim.
