YMCA Long Course Championships: Marietta’s Tim Phillips Shines Again

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, July 30. MARIETTA's Tim Phillips put together another amazing night with his second straight evening with a YMCA meet record double at the YMCA Long Course Championships.

Phillips downed the men's 100 free YMCA mark with a 50.72. The performance eclipsed the 51.25 set by Evan Reed last year. Pottstown's John Hauser touched second in 52.37, while B R Ryall's Nick Iwanicki wound up third in 52.63.

Phillips posted another double YMCA record evening as he shot down the standard in the men's 50 fly with a 24.54 in prelims. He then lowered it with a winning time of 24.18 in finals. Both efforts surpassed the 25.30 set by Jayme Cramer for M.E. Lyons back in 2001. Red Bank's T.J. McCarthy finished second in 25.76 with Bath Area's James Wells taking third in 25.86.

Laura Simon of Middle Tyger opened the night with a winning time of 4:54.10 in the women's 400 IM. Tri-Hampton's Courtney Beidle placed second in 4:59.48, while West Shore's Madeline Hoch, 14, completed the top three in 5:00.88.

Montclair's Matt Navata just missed the YMCA record of 4:32.23 set by Joey Faltraco of Spartanburg in 1997 in the men's 400 IM. Navata topped the finale in 4:32.29, while Brandywine's Tom McKee finished second in 4:35.70. South Family's Ty Perkins claimed third in 4:38.26.

Anne Arundel's Emily Lloyd cleared 57 seconds with a 56.79 for the meet record in the women's 100 free. She lowered her 57.07 set last year. Gr. Flint's Anna Wujciak, 14, took second in 58.58, while Wilton's Shelby Fortin finished third in 58.68.

Cheshire's Lauren Solernou won the women's 200 back in 2:16.39. Fortin moved up from third in the 100 free to second in the 200 back with a 2:18.63, while Coffman's Emily Slabe, 13, was the youngest medalist of the evening with a 2:20.58.

Another YMCA record just barely held up as Patrick Schirk's 2:01.69 set for Pottstown in 2005 in the men's 200 back withstood the 2:01.70 clocked by Rappahannock's Josh Friedel. Countryside's Steven Zimmerman placed second in 2:03.46, while Wilton's Adam Lebovitz took third in 2:07.89.

Stevens Point's Becca Weiland took down a 15-year-old YMCA record in the women's 50 fly with a 27.79 in prelims before clocking a 27.27 in finals for the win. Beth Karaica set the previous mark with a 28.24 for Pittsburgh back in 1994. Flushing's Kirsten Guelly finished second in 28.65, while South Family's Brittney Rohr placed third in 28.78.

Middle Tyger's Addie Carne, Haley Lips, Morgan Brooks and Simon set the YMCA record in the women's 800 free relay with an 8:28.90. The readout beat the 8:29.28 set by West Shore last year. Upper Main Line's Matt Luminais, Nathan Reed, Thomas Mershon and Matthew Salig won the men's 800 free relay in 7:49.21 to eclipse the YMCA record of 7:52.27 set by Middle Tyger last year.
