Xavier vs. Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Michigan, January 28. THE Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving scored 123.5 points en route to a non-conference win over visiting Xavier University this evening on senior night here at Jones Natatorium.

With the victory, the Eagles improve to 2-6 on the season, while XU drops to 1-4.

EMU set the tone early with a 3:59.21, first place combined effort from Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow), Lexi Piranian (Brentwood, Tenn.-Ravenwood), Jacquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville), and Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown) in the 400 medley relay.

Sophomore Briana Emig (Sewickely, Pa.-Ambridge) recorded two of EMU's nine first place finishes this evening, picking up wins in both the 1,000 and 200 freestyle. She led the way in the 1,000 free after touching the wall in 10:15.49, and was followed by teammate Wesley Blassneck (Marco Island, Fla.-Lely) in second with her time of 10:36.26. Emig would also lead the podium sweep in the 200 free, as she, Helena Tolic (Zagreb, Croatia-Sportska Gimnazija), and Lindsey Kolar (Makanda, Ill.-Carbondale Comm.) went 1-2-3 in the event.

The Eagles again swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle. Kowalski sprinted to a first place finish in 53.25. Samantha Nameth (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) took second in 54.40, and Tolic came in third with a time of 54.48. In the 50 free, Nameth picked up a first place finish in 25.33. She narrowly outpaced teammate Tracy Morgan (Strongsville, Ohio-Strongsville) who came in second with a 25.35 performance.

In the 200 IM, Swartz paced the Green and White after completing the distance in 2:09.36 in first. Maraskine took third in 2:12.43, while Lauren Kalinosky (Novi, Mich.-Novi) finished in fourth in 2:14.75.

Elisa Torres (Antioch, Calif.-Deer Valley) recorded the top time in the 200 butterfly (2:09.76), and Amanda Kiefer (Piqua, Ohio-Lehman Catholic) also notched a victory for the Eagles in the 200 backstroke, completing the event in 2:09.35.

On the boards, Christina Nunez-Wood (Denver, Colo.-Bear Creek) would take first with her score of 308.26. Her efforts represent the second highest mark in the Mid-American Conference and is also an NCAA consideration mark. Senior Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) tallied 304.20 points in a close second.

The Eagles will return to action at the Ohio State Winter Invitational on Feb. 12 in Columbus, Ohio. The event is scheduled for a noon start.
