World University Games, Water Polo: Women’s Classification Events Begin

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 8. THE women began their classification rounds in water polo action at the World University Games held in Serbia.

Italy edged Japan, 11-10, for seventh place honors with Japan taking eighth overall. Silvia Motta led the way with five goals as Italy went 11-for-29 from the field. Misa Konaka notched four goals for Japan, which converted on 10 of 24 shots.

In quarterfinals, Hungary downed Serbia, 13-5. Barbara Bujka tallied four goals to lead Hungary, which connected on 13 of 36 shots. Dragana Ivkovic led Serbia with two goals, as the team went 5-for-24 from the field.

Canada clipped Australia, 10-8, in the other quarterfinal match contested. Saara Majuri and Monika Eggens both posted hat tricks for Canada, while the team went 10-for-28 from the field. Rowena Webster paced Australia with nearly all of its goals, accounting for six of them. Australia went 8-for-25.
