World University Games, Water Polo: China, Australia Win Gold Medals

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 12. THE final two days of water polo action featured the medal matches at the World University Games.

China won the women's gold medal with a 12-8 victory over Hungary. Gao Ao continued her strong performance throughout the tournament with four goals to lead China to the top of the podium. China converted on 12 of 31 shots. Barbara Bujka and Alexandra Kiss tallied two goals each for Hungary, which went 8-for-29 from the field.

Russia beat Canada, 10-8, for the women's bronze medal. Olexandra Karpovich notched a hat trick to lead Russia, which connected on 10 of 32 shots. Stephanie Valin collected a hat trick for Canada, which went 8-for-22 from the field.

Australia clipped Croatia for the men's gold medal, 6-4. Aaron Younger tallied two goals for the Aussies, which converted on 6 of 28 shots. Marin Ban paced Croatia with half its goals, as the team went 4-for-26 from the field.

Host Serbia earned bronze with a 9-4 triumph over Greece. Djordje Basic and Petar Filipovic led Serbia with two goals each, as the hosts went 9-for-24 from the field. Greece had four different players tally a goal as the team went 4-for-26.
