Women’s NCAA Water Polo: Big West Conference First Round

IRVINE, California, April 26. HAWAI'I, UC Irvine, San Diego State and Cal State Long Beach–the top four seeds–all advanced to the Big West Conference Tournament semifinals. The tournament is being held at the Anteater Aquatic Complex on the University of California Irvine campus.

No. 1 Hawai'i 7 vs. No. 8 Pacific 2
The top-seeded Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine, in their first season competing in the Big West Conference, captured their first victory with a score of 7-2 over the Pacific Tigers.

Hawai'i held Pacific to a single goal in the first period by Malena Prlain and one in the fourth by Rebecca Wright. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and 2-1, Hawaii, at the half. The Rainbow Wahine exploded for five goals in the second half to bring the final score to 7-2. Hawai'i was led by two-goal scorers Caity Lopes da Silva, Amarens Genee and Zoe Respondek, with Danielle Lewis also netting a goal. Amy carlson saved eight shots for Hawai'i, and the Tigers' Michele Reiton stopped 13 shots.

No.2 UC Irvine 8 vs. No. 7 UC Davis 5
The host Anteaters, led by Hillary Estrada's hat trick plus Cambria Shockley's two goals, defeated the UC Davis Aggies 8-5.

UC Irvine went up 2-1 in the first quarter on goals by Kelsey Thornton and Estrada's initial goal. Kathryn Bailey tightened the score for UC Davis with just 13 ticks left in the period. The Anteaters earned four unanswered goals in the second period; Hannah Curran scored for the Aggies to make the score 6-2 at halftime. Kelsey Klatt and Estrada scored for UC Irvine in the third quarter to end the Anteater scoring at eight. Carmen Eggert, Jessica Dunn and Paige Oreglia put the ball in the net in the second half for UC Davis. Jillian Yocum saved 12 shots for the Anteaters, and Riane Woods stopped five for UC Davis.

No. 3 San Diego State 11 vs. No. 6 UC Santa Barbara 2
The San Diego State Aztecs limited the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos to single goals by Shelby Haroldson in the first period and a Holly Smith in the second quarter on their way to their 11-2 victory.

Anique Hermann started the Aztec scoring just 2:00 into the game. After Haroldson's goal 26 seconds later, Taelor Moreno and Tori Long fired back to give San Diego State a 3-1 first-quarter lead. Amber Pezzolla and Bailey Wickliffe began the San Diego State scoring in the second quarter. Smith brought the differential to 5-2 later in the period, but Carina Carballo and Moreno put goals in the net for a 7-2 halftime lead for San Diego State. Hermann, Pezzola and Emily Whalen enabled the Aztecs to go ahead 10-3 after the third period, and Taylor Gums added the 11th goal with just a minute left in the contest.

No. 4 Cal State Long Beach 8, No. 5 Cal State Northridge 2
A 6-2 run in the second half enabled the Cal State Long Beach 49ers to a 8-2 victory over the Cal State Northridge Matadors. It marked the second time in the past three years the 49ers have advanced to the semifinal round.

Coriann Snyder and Chelsea Parks gave Long Beach State a 2-0 lead after the first period, and there was no scoring in the second period. Justine Morgan, Melissa Matheson and Chaire Martin contributed goals to the 49ers cause in the third period. The Matadors' Jenny Jamison broke the team's 25:29 scoreless drought with the first goal of the fourth period. Morgan scored twice and Rachel Cretcher scored once for Long Beach State. With just 39 seconds left in the game, Leah Janke put the ball in the net for the Matadors.

Semifinal Round
In semifinal action, Cal State Northridge will face Pacific, UC Davis will meet UC Santa Barbara, Hawai'i takes on Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine will play San Diego State.
