NEW COMMIT: The University of Wisconsin has received their second early verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season from in-state standout and U.S. Open qualifier Abby Wanezek of Elm Grove, Wis.

She will arrive in Madison along with Jensen Beach, Fla. native Blair Stoneburg as a member of the Badgers’ Class of 2026.

Her verbal commitment comes on the same day the Badgers opened a new era by hosting their first official practice in their brand new facility, the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center, that had been under construction for the past few years.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so humbled and excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Wisconsin!! I’m so grateful for my family, friends, and coaches who have encouraged me along the way! Can’t wait to be a Badger!!️”

Primarily a backstroker, Wanezek trains year-round with Elmbrook Swim Club and earned two bronze medals and a silver at the Wisconsin 13&O State Championships in March before COVID hit. She also recorded two best times at the Toyota U.S. Open in December.

Last summer, she finaled in three events at Minneapolis Sectionals before going on to secure the runner-up spot in both the 50m free and 200m back at Wisconsin 13&O LCM Championships. At NCSAs in March 2019, Wanezek raced to 15th place in the 50 back.

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 24.95
  • 100 back – 54.20
  • 200 back – 1:57.82
  • 50 free – 23.11
  • 100 free – 50.35

Currently a junior at Brookfield East High School, Wanezek is already a four-time Wisconsin DI State Championship finalist. She finished second in both the 50 free and 100 back during her sophomore season while taking sixth in the 100 free and ninth in the 100 back in her rookie campaign.

She has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts in the pool and in the classroom.

Wanezek is a big get for the Badgers as they look to replenish their backstroke group following the graduation of Beata Nelson. She would’ve been their third-fastest 100 backstroker last season and her best time in the 100 back would’ve scored in the B-final at the 2020 Big Ten Championships.
