Winter Juniors-West: After Prelims, Sandpipers and Maximus Williamson Locked In For Big Night

Blazing-fast times from the Sandpipers of Nevada contingent, along with Maximus Williamson, have defined the first three days of the Winters Juniors Championships-West. With the last session of finals scheduled for the evening in Austin, that theme should continue. Here is a look at what transpired during the last session of preliminaries.

Results

Girls’ 200 Backstroke

The Sandpipers duo of Bella Sims and Katie Grimes posted the fastest times of the morning, respective efforts of 1:53.05 and 1:53.59. Sims and Grimes have collected multiple titles during the competition, with Grimes dropping a National Age Group record in the 400 individual medley on Friday night. Teagan O’Dell qualified in the third slot, with a time of 1:54.14.

Boys’ 200 Backstroke

Keaton Jones put together a fantastic morning performance, as he threatened the 1:40 barrier in the 200 backstroke. Jones touched the wall in 1:40.32 to claim the top seed in comfortable fashion. He was followed in the second position by Nate Germonprez, who went 1:43.67, while Maximus Williamson is lurking in the No. 3 spot behind a time of 1:43.77.

Girls’ 100 Freestyle

Just after qualifying for the final of the 200 backstroke, Mission Viejo’s Teagan O’Dell returned to the blocks and grabbed the top seed for the final of the 100 freestyle. O’Dell stopped the clock in 48.56, which was quicker than the 48.93 of Claire Weinstein of the Sandpipers.

Boys’ 100 Freestyle

Cade Duncan sped to a time of 43.17 to book Lane Four for the final, but he’ll have plenty of challengers in the chase for the West title. Ethan Harrington, the champ in the 50 freestyle, went 43.34 for the second seed, with Jacob Wimberly going 43.44 for the third seed. Maximus Williamson advanced to another final, this time in the fourth spot behind a swim of 43.45.

University of Texas freshman Lydia Jacoby, racing in her home pool, covered her prelim in 2:10.13, good for the fastest time of the morning. Jacoby won the 100 breaststroke on Friday night and will try to complete the breaststroke double. She was followed in the second spot by Piper Enge, who checked in at 2:11.75.

It was a tightly packed prelims in the 200 breaststroke, with Joshua Corn the only athlete under 1:56. Corn advanced as the top seed behind a mark of 1:55.94, but he’ll be pressed in the final by Jake Eccleston (1:56.06) and Daniel Li (1:56.12).

As was the case in the 200 backstroke, Bella Sims and Katie Grimes qualified in the first and second places. Sims turned in a time of 1:53.50, with Grimes next in 1:54.33. Both Sandpipers athletes will be busy in the last session of the meet, as Grimes is also expected to race the 1650 freestyle.

David Schmitt was just under a second faster than the rest of the field, as he claimed the No. 1 seed in 1:43.56. Schmitt was followed as the second seed by Arthur Balva, who was the only other swimmer under 1:45. Balva touched the wall in 1:44.55.
