Wingate Men, Johns Hopkins Women Lead After Day Two of Blue Grass Mountain Championships

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, February 16. THE Wingate men's team and Johns Hopkins' women's team held leads after the second day of competition at the 2007 Blue Grass Mountain Conference championships. Wingate has 511 points, five more than defending BGMC champion Washington & Lee (506 points). The event concludes on Saturday.

The Bulldogs earned three NCAA Division II "A" Cuts and barely missed a fourth. Freshman Gus Chagas (Recife, Brazil) won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 49.16. The winning time was an "A" Cut, meet record and school-record.

Chagas overcame a 15-yard deficit on the final leg of the 800 Freestyle Relay, helping the Bulldogs pick up a come-from-behind win over second-place W&L. The quartet posted a 6:52.02 time, barely missing an "A" Cut (6:51.79).

Bulldog freshman Kyle Corcoran (Kent, Wash.) won the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:01.14, good for an "A" Cut, meet record and school-record. Classmate Brian Parks (Cary, N.C.) was second in the 400 IM (4:08.32).

For the women, Wingate junior Sergey Vlashchenko (Khabarovsk, Russia) was triumphant in the 100 Breaststroke, recording an "A" Cut time of 57.09. Vlashchenko's 100 Breaststroke time was also a school record.

The Bulldog relay teams had a great day, as the 200 Medley Relay foursome finished second to Washington & Lee. Wingate's time of 1:33.90 barely missed an "A" Cut.

Wingate University junior Maria Vlashchenko (Khabarovsk, Russia) earned an individual and a relay NCAA Division II "A" Cut Friday at the 2007 Blue Grass Mountain Conference championships. The Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center (MAC) pool in downtown Charlotte is the site for this year's BGMC event.

Vlashchenko, senior Kristin Newman (Hanover, Md.), junior Rebekah Moody (Martinez, Ga.) and freshman Lara Golesorkhi (Stuttgart, Germany) won the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:47.60. The "A" Cut, meet record and school record time was six seconds faster than Wingate's time in Friday morning's preliminaries.

As an individual, Vlashchenko won the 100 Breaststroke with a 1:03.70. The 100 Breaststroke time was an "A" Cut, meet record and school record time. Golesorkhi won the 100 Butterfly with a school-record time of 57.64.

On the team charts, Wingate has 383 points, second only to defending champion Johns Hopkins (Md.) University (501 points). The Bulldogs won the BGMC crown in 2004 and 2005.
