Williams College Extends Lead at NESCAC Men’s Championships

BRUNSWICK, Maine, February 24. THE Williams College men's team extended their commanding lead with six more victories on a record-setting Saturday in Day Two of the NESCAC Championship at Bowdoin College. One NESCAC record, one pool record and two meet records were set on Saturday after a first-day that saw no new marks reached.

In the overall scores, the Ephs have accumulated 1,364.5 points as a team, out-pacing second-place Amherst (926) and third-place Tufts (902) heading into the final day of competition on Sunday.

Steve Spinelli of Williams picked up his second win of the weekend, claiming the 1000-yard freestyle in a NESCAC-record 9:21.99, shattering the old mark by over five seconds. Teammate Chris Millen captured the 400-yard individual medley in 3:58.60, establishing a new Greason Pool record. Other Williams winners included Rob Hanningan in the 200-yard freestyle and Tyler Bonewell in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Ephs also earned two wins in the relay events, taking the 800 freestyle relay in a Meet-Record time of 6:48.17 and also collecting the 200-yard medley relay.

Middlebury's Rob Collier set a new NESCAC Meet record in the 100-yard butterfly (49.85), earning his second victory of the weekend. Hamilton's Todd Johnson was the other individual winner in Saturday's action, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 51.82.
