Wildcats On Top of TYR Invitational After Day One

EVANSTON, Ilinois, November 17. THE Northwestern men are ahead of the competition after Day 1 of the TYR Invitational where they are playing host. The Wildcats lead by more than 150 points with a score of 405.5.

Northwestern won all six events contested on Friday during the first day of the TYR Invitational at the Norris Aquatics Center.

The Wildcats have 380 points to lead the meet, while Southern Illinois is second with 275. Close behind the Salukis is Michigan State with 253 points, while Kenyon College is fourth with 190.

Morning preliminaries established a 20-swimmer finals field for three heats: an eight-person bonus final, an eight-person final and a four-person super final.

The Wildcats swam an NCAA 'B' time of 1:20.70 to win the 200 free relay to kick off Friday's finals session. Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija), Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) comprised the relay.

In the prelims of the 500 free, sophomore Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) blew away the field and smashed the Norris pool record with an NCAA 'B' time of 4:20.78. He then won the super final with a 4:20.80.

Sophomore Andy Long (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) took sixth in the 'B' final, besting teammate Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), who took seventh for NU.

Alexandrov came back and won both the prelims and the finals of the 200 IM, turning in a 1:52.05 in the evening swim. Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) qualified fourth for the super final, and finished in fourth with a 1:53.60.

Freshman Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton), seventh after the prelims, climbed up to win the 'B' final and take fifth with a 1:52.88.

Grevers and Barbic swept the 50 free super final, with Grevers swimming a 'B' cut of 20.02 to win and Barbic ending up second with a 20.49. Grevers' time of 19.95 in the prelims was just .02 seconds shy of the Norris pool record.

Bubolz won the 'B' final with a 20.69, while Ehret was eighth and Jimmy Sourbeer (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) ninth.

In diving, junior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) was first after the 1-meter prelims with a 279.15 before scoring a 332.80 to win the finals. Sophomore Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) took second with a 317.55 to sweep the event for NU.

The Wildcats then swept the 400 medley relay, with Grevers, Alexandrov, Bubolz and Barbic swimming a 'B' time of 3:15.29 to win. Vogel, John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Nilsson and Sourbeer took second with a 3:23.16.

Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. with the finals scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Norris Aquatics Center.
